What are everyones views about writing info on cranks, such as depth? I have seen a number of people that do it in perminent marker but I'm not sure if that is a good move...

I always considered this, but I just keep a little piece of paper with the depth on it in the same slot with my crankbaits.

I once took a black sharpie and wrote  "NO PIKE" on each side of a 6xd.....................it didn't work.

I usually write in black permanent market on the bill of the crankbait

 

never had an issue...sometimes I have to re-write it because it gets worn out

Does not effect anything. I don't do it all the time but I have... And it doesnt really change anyrhing

I would think some companies would start printing depths on the bait somewhere. I am pretty good at telling by the lip size of the approximate depth, but it would help to have it printed on there.

I label my planos ontop thats about,it. I,dont write on my baits

What I've done before is write the depth on the side as gills using red ink, for instance "6 feet" written in red ink in a crescent moon pattern on the side looks like red gills.  Can't say it made a difference but it looked better then just writting random numbers on the bills 

Never done that, I just go by the bills length and start there.

in the past i wrote a number (max depth) on the underbelly back at the "tail" on either side with a thin black sharpie.  no way at all it affected the crank or its affectiveness.

 

now that i am more familiar with all the cranks....i don't do that as much...

I think if you need to label your cranks, you have too many and aren't familiar with them, not a recipe for success, but to each his own.

I don't label my baits. I separate mine in my tackle trays. I've got a 0-5 foot box, a 6-10 foot box, and a 10+ box. I don't need to be any more accurate than that. If you're really concerned about writing on them just buy the Rapala DT crankbaits. They have the diving depth right on the bill.

??  you lost me on your post??  "not a recipe for success"... huh??

since it doesn't negatively affect the crankbait in any way, i think if you are fairly new to fishing, and it helps you learn your baits better....it gives you a quick "reminder" to help you.   what is the harm?  to me, that could be a "key ingredient" in your recipe for success...quicly being able to identify and know the depth at which a certain crank runs...

I scratch the big name fisherman signature off my bait. I don't wanna trick them into thinking they are being caught by someone who knows what the hell he is doing.

Haven't done if but thought about doing it. I mainly throw squarebills so depths are generally the same. I have a few deep diving cranks that I have no idea what the depths are so I wish I didn't it with them.

I have several Plano boxes of crank baits sorted by body size.  I can look at the bill and get a feel for the dive depth.  But when I take the bait out of the package I loose the product info, so I try to engrave what I can on the bill.  But I've had baits that I've just plane worn out and needed to replace; problem is I could not recall who made what, so I get the first lookalike that I come across.  I wish all manufactures would put their product info (model/depth) on their baits; it might promote more product loyalty.

I use a fine tip sharpie and it works just fine. On cranks I have not memorized, I write the depth on the bill. On swimbaits I put a FS, S, or W on the chin by the line tie so I can tell what it is (fast sink, sink, wake).
