Looking For New Squarebill/small Crank Rod

Featured Replies

Broke my favorite squarebill rod last weekend, Powell diesel. Looking at options at or under 100$.

Rods that have caught my eye

Shimano Clarus 7' medium moderate or the 7' medium heavy moderate

Abu garcia veritas 7' winch medium moderate

I'm a fan of the fiberglass rods for cranking and that's what I've used before, but haven't really found many offerings in price range.

On the 7 ft rods I like a rod that has good tip flex to fight the fish, but not super whippy while casting. It seems more difficult to accurately cast parrellel to banks when the rod is too whippy.

If anyone has experience with these two rods or have another rod to recommend, I appreciate it.

Look forward to hearing from you guys, thanks.

I bought the 7' M MF Clarus this year do my square bill rod. I paired it with a BPS PQ and braid, I love it. It deffinitly has a parabolic action, casts well, has some sensitivity, and decent backbone for a M MF rod. I cought a few 2 pounders and it handled great. Hope this helps.

I would take a hard look at the St.. Croix Mojo Bass Target Cranker. I believe it's 6'10. May be a good choice.

That's what I'm using. It is glass, 6'10" medium moderate. I love it. You might have to pay $110-120 though.

Why not just buy another Diesel? They're only like 60 bucks and you said they were your favorite rod. I love diesels for square bill fishing-got 3 of them for that!

I would get another diesel if I broke mine

I'll make you a great deal on a 7' M Veritas winch...........I like the rod, but I crank grass most of the time, and it's just a little too "soft" IMHO for clean rips out of the grass. Around rocks/docks/wood it's great. I have gone to using my 7'6" MH winch rod for that, and it's much better, plus I can also toss my deep divers with it too, so the 7' M winch is kind of the odd man out of the rotation right now.

I may do that, I just like trying different stuff, I'm a weirdo when it comes to testing products out lol. I def loved the diesel, but I've read a lot of reviews about them breaking, which for 50-60 bucks isn't a huge deal, it's just inconvenient. Mine broke in half at beginning of cast. I've actually recommended them for squarebills, I think they have perfect action for them,as well as jerkbaits.

Like I said just looking for suggestions on other rods, another diesel isn't out of the question though.

The Mojo Bass cranking rods are great. You can get a 6`10``, a 7` or a 7`4``.

Although Iv never owned one, Iv heard through a bunch of people, the BPS crankin stick is a good one.

I couldn't find "the perfect square bill rod" I decided to try my 7' 1" *** *** medium fast And could not be happier.. I bought it for throwing weightless worms and Senkos but It's now my dedicated square bill rod.. I have Lews speed spool on it and fish it around a lot of timber ..it cast the kvd 1.5 so accurate.. Haven't lost a fish on it yet.. Love my square bill set up..

I've had multiple opinions on what is a good square bill rod over the past few years.  Last year, I thought I would upgrade to a Fenwick Aetos.  After half a season, it broke - my fault, and since then I've decided that a more value oriented approach to square bill rods is in order.  Therefore, I went back to the rod I used before I got the Fenwick - a BPS Extreme  ERT74MT.  It was originally marketed as a light action pitching rod - a Woo Davis special.  It sucked as a pitching rod - too much tip.  But it is a great square bill rod, in that it has enough tip and lots of back bone.  It is a decent value at its regular price of $99 and it frequently goes on sale at $20 off.  If you live close to a BPS, you might want to take a look at that rod.

No glass for this guy, but if a must I'd save a bit and pony up for a Seeker.
