I'm looking for a new spinning rod, but I'm mostly a baitcaster guy so I need a little help. I know what I'm looking for, so I'll just tell you what I want and let me know if you know of a rod like that. I want a med-light around 7 ft., but it needs to be fairly stiff. I hate whippy spinning rods, so it has to be stiff. I'm looking for something in the $70-$100 range, I can't spend too much. So let me know if you know of a rod that fits my description! Thanks fellas

The Abu Garcia Veritas for $80, in M or MH might fit what you're looking for.

***. Not whippy at all, very sensitive for the price, most comfortable handle I've used on the spinning rods. That'd be my first, second, and third choice at that price point.

Medium light & fairly stiff don't usually go together. I think you would be better off looking at medium or MH.  

Get a stiff spinning rod, and then you'll be one of these fools who is constantly breaking off fish on 8lb line and wondering why.

Stiff and ML can't go in the same sentence.

Stiff and ML aren't necessarily going to happen, but you can get a ML with a nice light tip that still has a little bit of backbone. I, too, don't like rods that fish like a rubberband. The *** ML fit the bill for me. I could comfortably cast light weights, but it still had enough backbone on the lower part of the blank to not completely fold over every time I hooked a fish.

I throw 3/4 ounce football head jigs with my ML 6'6" St. Croix Premier spinning rod.   That ain't gonna happen with a noodle rod.

ML St. Croix rods are a good place to look. I have a 7' ML Triumph spinning rod and it's definitely more like a Medium. It doesn't feel overpowered by 1/2 oz walking baits and still handles 1/8 oz Rapala F7's well with the right reel.

 

I'll have to try the 3/4 oz football heads on it. 

I think the st.croix ml is a very versatile rod. It's what I find myself going to more and more. If you want stiff though try a 7'medium croix. That thing is like a broom stick

I have a 7'm sc3 I built a factory 7ml avid and a 3 power loomis mbr. The 7'm is considerably stiffer then the aforementioned rods. So I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

I guess so. My 7MF Triumph is quite a bit lighter than my 7MF Tatula, that rod truly does fish closer to a MH.

Broomstick may have been the wrong choice of words but it is a very powerfull rod with IMO a stiffer tip than a ml croix.

An example I was fishing flukes on Friday. Had them on the medium rod and I could feel myself ripping the bait from the fish. Switched to the ml with a softer tip and started hooking up. Both had 2500 reels and 10lb braid with mono leader. IMO the softer tipped ml allowed the fish to grab the bait more and allowed me to hook them up. If the op wants a stuff rod hard to go wrong with a medium st croix or abu.

I just got two of these. Normally $100 but on sale for $69. I just checked and the sale is over. I'd keep an eye on them, they will most likely go back on sale again. Won the Outdoor Life rod of the year this year too.

What lure parameter?  In a ml there is only 1 rod that comes to my mind that may fit the bill.  I might be looking at an inshore rod and Star rods are known for having stiff tips, I own 3 of them and it's true.  A Star sg612ism, ml 7' 6/12 line 1/4 -5/8 lure, on paper it fits the bill, I don't own it so I can't specifically recommend model.  I can say with confidence Star makes a really nice rod, they are popular with some of the peacock fishermen.  I just bought another one West Marine free shipping.

BPS Bionic blade micro...in 7' Medium. you will love it....very universal with many techniques from drop shot, jerks to cranks, spy baits and 7' MH for jigs.

I mean something that doesn't bend too much, but is still a thin rod. The St. Croix Triumph might be what I'm looking for, I used my buddy's med-light Triumph and it was almost exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the other ideas I'll check some of them out.

I dont own that specific rod, but the 6'9" ML carbonlites are said to be a sweetheart of a rod. Not overtly powerful but a quick enough tip for plastics fished in open water. I have/had 4 other models in the line and they all fish nicely. I honestly reach for the 7'M spinning rod over my tatula if that tells you anything.

"Whippy" in my mind's eye is a slow action low resonance rod. A fast or XF high modulus graphite rod with a ML description probably won't be described as whippy at all. 3/4 football heads vertically jigged with  a rod like this I can see, but casting or dragging bottom....?

If you are looking for a thin stiff rod, you can check out the Quantum QX36. I know that they are not high end, but I have been impressed with them. They are pretty thin and stiff.
