So while at Bass Pro today a person who worked there informed me that when spooling a Tatula not to fill the spool all the way like a normal reel and to only spool it about half way. He said it has to do with the way the line comes off of the spool. Is this correct or has he been misinformed? He said that he was told this by a Daiwa rep. I have my Tatula reels spooled about an 1/8 inch from the top currently.

I dont know the "correct" way,scanned the manual doesnt say, but I have mine to the rim. Im not having any control issue or bad line management all is good. Half seems way too little. Even at 1/8 Id still try to go 1/16 at least. If youre pleased with it as is stay that way I guess. 

A casting reel doesn't perform to it's full capability halfway full of line.  You lose IPT and you may lose casting distance.  I have 2 Tatula Type R's and they are both filled full, I haven't had any issues at all.   I wouldn't take that advice if I were you.

That gentlemen you spoke with is incorrect. I've filled both of my Tatulas close to the top of the spool. They work perfect.

My Tatula reels a are filled about 1/16" below full,no casting issues using Sunline FC line with Tangle a free line dressing.

2 Tatula's both spooled about a 1/16" from the edge. No issues here.

Imagine that, a BPS worker giving misinformed/incorrect advice.  Is that the first time that has happened.  Sadly, no, in my experience misinformed/incorrect/bad advice is par for the course for BPS employees.  This has pretty much been my experience for all BPS employees in all departments, with the exception of the shoe department.  In the shoe department, when you ask, "Do you have X shoe in (whatever)  size, they have been trained to say, I'll go look."

 

At the BPS stores I most often frequent, Independence, MO & Olathe KS, they do a good job of keeping the store looking pretty and straightened up, but don't count on them for information.

It was the Independence store and it wasn't the first time they have given me bad advice....lol

No tatulas but all of my reels get about 1/8-1/16 from full and do just fine.

I can't imagine a Diawa Rep. Saying such a thing.

I've heard from a few people to fill the Tatula spool half full to keep the line from rubbing on the T-Wing when it is engaged for reeling. It was designed to touch the line to push it down into the groove. I have a few and they're all full of line, haven't had any issues. Having a half spool just leads to excess memory and loss of casting distance; no thanks.

No Tatula, but 3 T3 1016s.  One new no line yet.  One used came filled to the bevel on the spool, one used came filed about 1/16 below this point.  See no difference in line pickup.  All my reels regardless of make get completely filled.  No problem casting or with line pickup.  Have to agree with Tywithay's last comment.

I don't see any mechanical reason for such advice. If this were the case Daiwa would be scrambling to fix the issue, not encouraging their reps to push a work-around.

That's pretty weird advice. I wonder what the logic is behind that. I spooled mine to about 1/16 to the top with straight flouro and never had an issue.
