When you guys go out fishing do you ever retie your leaders during the trip or just have a new leader tied on every trip and use it all day? Was just wondering because I'm not super familiar with leaders and I'm starting to use them more.

I retie it when it gets too short to be functional. Might be a couple times in a day, might be once a month.

I was asking more along the lines of losing knot strength over time, I know for my lures and stuff after a good bit of catching fish I'll retie to get a new fresh knot and was just wondering if y'all do the same with leader...

Good question. For me, I feel my line from the knot to the hook if I've 

 

1) Brought the line through a snag, or rough area

2) Caught a fish (esp if combined with #1)

 

If I feel any rough part on the line, i pinch it as I slide my fingers down to the hook and make sure it isn't debris. If it is NOT debris, I'll either cut back to that point, or retie the leader.

 

I like to tie on a new leader each time I go fishing, but I don't. Maybe 50% of the time I'll do that.

I will tie a new leader when it gets +/_ 12" left

It depends how much use it sees. I retire my snap swivels and carolina rig after every large bass. Or every night. Keep your knots tight and fresh.

I can go days and days on my freshwater combos, I've had the same leader and jig on for 2 weeks on my peacock set up, caught a lot of fish too.  If I'm changing techniques or species I'll put a new leader on.

Saltwater I start with a fresh leader every time, sometimes they get too short or scrapped up from the coral, I'll put a fresh one on.

i'll check the leader for nicks, etc often and retie as needed.

I will re-tie if the leader gets between 12-15".  If it is longer I will re-tie if I have a big fishing trip or tournament coming up.  Other than that I don't do anything to it.

A leader usually lasts a couple trips for me, because I tie on a 8-12' leader.
