Why Can't I Grow Anything But Tomatos?

What's wrong with me? Can't get more than 1 green pepper per plant. Broccoli flowers are tiny and flowering. All I can grow is maters. This happens year after year. If I was a farmer I'd be unemployed. Any guesses?

Go to a store that sells fresh fish and get fishheads...bury them with your plants..eggshells, lobster shells, they all work to feed and boost the plants.

Would you be unemployed if you weren't a farmer??

Well...you know what 'maters grow best in...you seem to be full of it.

There are a couple fertilizers that help with yields..are you growing in pots or the ground? Have you had your soil tested?

I just have a small garden in the yard. I top it off with fresh soil every year, but that's about it.

As far as the fishheads, will they attract the neighborhood cats?

If it's just a small garden miracle grow the mess out of it at least once a week.

If you put a pepper plant to close to your tomato , It will absorb the heat .Thats one tomatoe sammich I won't be forgetting. Not to sound stupid , how often are you watering , or possibly to much direct sunlight ?

I water every evening and the garden is on the west side of the house so it gets sun from noon on.

You could be drowning your plants. What kind of soil do you have (sandy, rich, clay, etc)? Do you have good drainage?

It's best to water everything including your lawn in the morning. When the soil is wet overnight, it can cause moldy soil.

Get a soil test kit and send it in for analysis.  Or just like stated above, miracle grow once a week.

Start with the soil. I've learned that's the key. Make sure you clean the garden each time you go to drop seeds. Excessive weed or root growth can choke off the veggies. I also added an automatic water system to mine that goes off twice a day because I'm lazy. No problems with my garden afterwards. Grow everything from veggies to pineapples.

It's awesome.

Water and nitrogen. Miracle grow would be easy if small garden.

Yes this is true.... Also consider a different source for Seeds.

Is anything else growin in the general vicinity. Just for an experiment put one plant somewhere else and see if there's a difference.

Before you plant, you should use a roto tiller to loosen up the soil. It will hold on to the water better and the roots will grow deeper.

Going to miracle grow the hell out of it this Saturday. See if I can turn things around

Although maybe good advice I think that some might be jumping to conclusions.

To do it right you probably really need to know about your soil. A hint might be what you can grow.

Most tomatoes are acidic. I'm not sure about the plants themselves but maybe your soil has something that is causing a problem.

Around here ag offices will test your soil ph level for free (I've never actually done it).

I believe that you can also buy inexpensive test kits at garden centers or poss hardware chains.

Pulling off the testing might be easier said than done.

As some said, Miracle grow might be an easy fix but with your soil being so far out of whack what you are adding via the Miracle Grow might have a higher concentration in it of what your soil already has too much of(?)

Once you figure out what your soil really needs then you just hand rake in whatever supplement your soil needs.

I cannot remember what all is available and what does what but several inexpensive additives are sold in typical garden centers.

I know that blood meal is one additive (not sure whether it raises or lowers PH), lime is another I cannot remember the others. They are often sold in bags like top soil.

Let us know how you come out.

I think the solution is far more easy that the soil! Slo, you need to talk to your plants, you need to let them know you love them and you will always look out for their best interest! That should be plenty of fertilizer for your garden to produce whatever you want to grow!!

Yup

i work at lowes in the garden department and i heard this alot from costumers. The most important thing is the soil, soil is very different everywhere and their are a couple of different soil. secondly, where are you planting it and is it in an area that has full sun, half sun or no sun with alot of shade? if you putting it in a pot then use potting mix and if you planting it outside then use Garden soil. cow manure can work as well but not as good as garden soil. also you can buy fertilizer and vegetable food. make a wide hole but not too deep. make sure to mix your ground soil with the vegetable soil but just a little (not alot). only water plants in the morning never at night because bacteria will kill your plants.
