I fish a shallow pond/river on a golf course quite often. I've had good luck mostly because the fishing is easy, but I want to try some topwater baits. There are some mattes on the water as well. I recently purchased a popper and a topwater frog and I'm excited to try them out, but in what ways should I go about doing so. Oh yea, the frog is all black (BPS Kermy) and the popper is black with a silver belly (another BPS bait). Tell me what works for you guys while fishing shallow topwaters.

I use a small 1/4oz topwater popper in conditions like that quite a bit. I've found that you generally want to drop it right on or as close you can get to the cover your targeting. I didn't have mattes but I did have a 2-3ft area with a lot of stumps and laydowns. I would drop almost on top of the cover and pop it once or twice then let it sit. The strikes all came after the first pop or two and hit it while it was still.

Shallow water: topwater spook, bomber shallow A crankbait, 1/4 oz t-rig, 5/16 oz jig.

Hollow body frog, small buzzbaits, Toads (SK Rage Tail Toad, Stanley Ribbit, Zoom, etc).

Throw a weightless t rigged senko in ponds like that, it almost feels like cheating.

For me, Ponds equal frogs for topwater, no need to go any further. Unless it's a pond where they have been hammered on with frogs and you need to show them something else, then my second choice would be a buzz bait.

only thing i'll add is... know when to stop casting topwater lures and switch to something else.

In a pond most of your bites will come right off the bank. Try casting down the bank instead of just straight out.
