Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Swim Jigs Only For Spring And Fall??? - What Are You Supposed To Use During The Summer?

I got a years worth of Bassin' magazine a few years ago and am reading them over again. I just saw an article by KVD where he states that while many people think of swim jigs as only spring lures, he likes them in the fall also. This makes it seem like he doesn't use them in the summer.

I hear some folks on here say they only use spinnerbaits in the spring and same with buzzbaits.

So if you aren't supposed to use swim jigs, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits in the summer, what are you supposed to use????

When bass are active they will eat anything that interest them including the lures you mentioned.

This reminds me of anglers who believe that you can't fish jigs with pork rind trailers unless the water is below 55 degrees, someone must have written that at some point so it's etched in the granite between bass anglers ears.

If a lure works in the winter, it will work in the summer or anytime in between, location is what counts.

I love buzzbaits during the summer, I'd choose a S-bill over a spinnerbait normally in the summer though, it all has to do with preference and cofidence

I fish a lot of plastics and hollow-body frogs. My life is lily pads from June to September.

I have a few baits that are in rotation from May through October. Spinnerbait and Jig with craw are always tied on. I will rotate between swimjig, squarebills, buzzbait and frog.

It is more about baits that can be effectively fished in the areas where the fish are during a particular season. In you example, these baits can be productive during the summer months. But in the summer pattern people may have more confidence in other baits, it just works for them. You just have to find what you are confident with and what works for you. Don't give up on a particular bait because of a pro interview or an article.

I use them all heavily spring summer and fall.

I refuse to believe there are baits that won't work at all during the summer, or baits that will only work in spring/fall.  However, there are baits that work better than others during certain times of year for sure.  Summertime for me has always meant slowing down and finding deeper water if available.  Hot water can make bass sluggish.  With that in mind, I don't usually use spinnerbaits in the summer, but that doesn't mean I've never caught a bass with one in July.  Heck, I used to use them almost exclusively when I first started getting into bass fishing as an adult because it seemed like the only lures I had that caught fish.

Until this year, I have hardly fished jigs at all.  I don't see myself starting until fall since I'm having plenty of success with  plastics and cranks this summer and I don't see why I would change that.

I read fishing mags/sites for advice and most of the time the advice is good, as long as it's not taken as the be-all/end-all holy scripture.

Not to change the subject but what kind of plastics and cranks?

Are your plastics weighted or unweighted?

Plastics = Senkos, yum dingers, and other assorted finesse worms.  All un-weighted.  I have had no luck yet (yet) with normal worms or tubes.

Cranks = square billed have worked recently.  A couple weeks ago I was catching them on a lipless rattle (BPS xps shad).

All the above can be true and is sound advice.

Something to possibly consider is that when you hear a fisherman tell you what they use or prefer to use during certain times of the year is that they might be meaning it's what they have confidence in throwing. Either they know how to properly present and impose action with some lures better than others or they know how to quickly eliminate unproductive areas using certain lures as search tools...or both.

More to consider is the scenario altogether. A tournament, just catching anything that will bite, or hunting for larger fish including those considered trophy sizes bass. What about the prey the bass are feeding upon? if bass are keyed in on frogs for some reason, you probably will not catch much using a jerkbait in open water (but you might). All of the above can influence what and when a fisherman uses a particular lure and what is going to stack the odds in his favor to be successful. Experience, knowing the bass habits and location will help make it easier to choose the proper lure.

Not that I know it all, but I'm a big believer in leaving lures at home that i have high confidence in using if I want to learn to fish other lures and how to catch fish with them.

Hmm, what are you supposed to use during the Summer ? though one .....how about spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and swim jigs ? :eyebrows:  sounds good to me.

It´s all about where, when, how deep and how fast.

Frogs r my FAVORITE summertime bait. Snag proof makes the best at the best price in my opinion. Frogzilla will get u a lot of big bites and less dinks. Really fun frog to throw. Just make sure u have the right gear 7-7 ft 3 hvy-mag hvy rod and 60-80 lb braid is necessary.
