If you had to use a 7 foot medium heavy rod and throw a 1/4 OZ jig with a 3/0 hook what size line would you use?

12 lb. Fluoro

As long as the hooks is not a "Light" wire deal, this should cover it.

 

Open water ~ 12 lb anything seems right

 

Medium cover -  15 - 20 lb anything including braid - (except rock or bridge pilings)

 

Dense cover - 40-50 lb braid.

Most of my MH rods carry 12# mono.  Any lure that light normally gets thrown on a Medium rod.  If I planned on using a MH rod on a regular basis to cast a 1/4 oz. jig, the first thing I would do is haul out all my MH rods (of the desired action) to see which one handles that weight the best.  A lighter line should help distance a little, but the most important thing will be the rod, second the reel, and last the line.

I would throw 10 or 12 lb fluoro.

Tournament you should already know what the bass are eating and where, the water clarity, temperature, weather and if your MH rod is spinning or casting. The line needs to be able to put bass in your boat under these conditions.

Where I'm throwing it is going to be a big deciding factor on that one. Normally, 12-15 pound will be fine but in heavier cover you might need to go to 17-20 pound.

Depends how well that particular rod will load up.  1/4 oz is a little light for many mh rods, but with the added trailer it should be ok.  Just using a lure weighing 1/4 oz I'd probably be using a med rod.

agree with 20lb braid, always adjust a small topshot of FC weather it be 12-15lb.

I have a medium fast action 6'3 casting rod with 14# copolymer. do you think that'd do the trick well enough for the 1/4 OZ jig with a 3/o hook?
