I am brand new to bass fishing. I started yesteady after watching a couple others catch bass. I bought a baitcaster rod and picked up a couple of spinner baits. I hooked one small 1-2 lb bass yesterday, but he shook the hook before I could land him. Today I caught my first bass. It was 8 lb 8 oz. I released it to be caught again. I look forward to learning a great deal more from all of you.

I'm afraid that it can only get worse from here!  I've never had much beginner's luck.  I guess that I had to wait 42 years to get mine!

Greetings and Welcome to the forums :)

Not bad for your first trip out , impressive !

Yeah, is that crazy?  I have not fished in years.  I might as well since I have a pond in the back yard!  You probably already know that I've pulled line on no less than two dozen birds nests.  But, I learn quickly.  I figure what works and what doesn't.  Most of the variable was in my reel setup and a inconsistent cast.  I found out that baitcasters are tough after I bought it.  I already feel good about it, but it's definitely more trouble with a light lure.  I'm down to a 1/4 oz spinner, and I'm managing it pretty well.  I caught the big boy on a 3/8 oz spinner from WalMart.  It was a Strike King Tour Grade that is black and has a couple of red accents.  It was overcast in the late afternoon following a light rain.  I was mostly casting close down the bank.  I started to fan out into deeper water, and it must have been about my 4th cast. I was about to give up, and he hit it near shallow water about 20' from where I was standing.

I really appreciate all of the replies.  It is cool to share this with people that appreciate it.

Welcome to BR.  Enjoy the forums.  Lots of great folks here. Great first fish!
