First Day Of Student Teaching On Monday...

Recommended Posts

Well i posted up here a little while ago that i got a student teaching placement.  The day has come and monday will be my first day.  Luckily i am not just thrown into the wolves and have a few weeks of orientation and getting used to the classroom then i pick up a subject a week until i am teaching the entire school day.  Funny thing is, forecast is calling for snow on Monday so my first day may be a snow day :)

Good luck. My wife has been teaching for 20 years. Be prepared for your summers off with training and more schooling, followed by 60 hour work weeks through the school year. All in all though, it is very rewarding.

And your snow days will be filled with grading and prep. Just remember cheese-its and beer are the official snack of grading.

Fly, we getting snow on Monday?

I better start watching the morning weather on NBC12.

I spoke with Chris Dunnavant of the VG&IF about his fishing course and Chris says he presents it to all grades.

Joel, a bass tournament guy in our area, has had the program for his 5th graders in Chesterfield County schools and one day when you get your own class consider calling Chris at VG&IF and speaking with him about the program.

Chris used to be an excellent tournament bass fisherman and he can talk bass fishing with you.

A former client who had retired from GM (aka: Generous Motors) decided to keep himself busy got a part time driving a school bus.  He had an epic quote that I'll never forget about teachers.  "What's so special about teachers facing students, I have to turn my back to them!"

Anyhow, good luck.

Here's to your first day.  Clearly you've waited a long time for this and you've earned it.

It's interesting to note that your new job description "Teacher", is just one word but the long list of modes that you'll have each and every day is so much more.

You'll never forget your first day.

My oldest will be in 5th grade next year......Good Luck.  I def have respect for anyone that wants to be a teacher especially after what most of us put them through as we grew up.  Congrats on your new adventure and the beginning of a rewarding teaching career.

Awesome fly! Hope you don't get snowed out!

My youngest is in 5th grade. Doesn't like school,

tho  :cry3: despite having an awesome male teacher.

Some of my fondest school memories are of my 5th

grade year. Mr. Jephson was very cool, interesting,

and made learning fun.

May your students say the same about you!

Best of luck to you. I am sure you will do great. Have fun, and pass on that learning is fun. It is an enormous responsibility you are undertaking, and the lives you influence will be many. Glad you following your dream.

Quick update on my student teaching experience thus far....i am a little over two weeks in and have picked up a 2 full subjects to teach, math and word study aka spelling, and will be picking up an additional class each week until i have the entire school day.  The plan is by the end of the month, I will be the teacher of all subjects.

So what i can say so far is I have never had a day go by as fast as the days in the classroom.  The teaching part is great and I am enjoying every minute of it.  The logistical piece is going to be the challenge to learn as i don't really think you can get a full grasp of that until you are the only one teaching the class.

I have already written more lesson plans in this short time than i have in all my schooling so far, i am not that good at it though.  There are so many things that come up and you have to adjust on the fly and i think that is what i like the most.

Anyways, just thought i would share an update...

Glad to hear you're enjoying this. Don't sweat the lesson plans. Nobody is good at that without on the job experience. The good news is; it gets a lot easier.

Being a good teacher is all about adjusting on the fly. If you enjoy that aspect of it, you will be just fine. Relax, and enjoy yourself.

Just stay neutral on the political side and teach true American history. Then you can say you are a TEACHER. Good Luck and God bless.

I have my sub license and enjoy teaching quite a bit.  I can't handle the politics of full-time teaching.  Subs can get away with a bit of "ignorance".

I *** you for being able to work past that.  Fifth grade is one of my favorite grade to teach!  They're old enough to understand most things but young enough to have a sense of wonder.

You enjoy yourself!  You'll love it!

Figured i would give another update...

Just started week 7 which is really week 6 because we missed a week for snow but anyways....i still love what i am doing and i am pretty much teaching the entire day with creating lesson plans and the like.  Had my first formal evaluation and my faculty supervisor was impressed and said she has no concerns on my teaching so far.  All in all it is a good time and i am looking forward to the next 5 or 6 weeks and getting my masters and certification.....
