An 8Lb Fish....

Featured Replies

To your best guesstimates...What would be the average length of a LMB (of average proportion) that weighs about 8lbs?

Charts vary a little bit, 24" isn't a bad guesstimate.

Yeah, about 24"

its probaly a wider range say from 20-25 inches depends on the girth....those spawining girls can be short and super fat.

Girth plays a major roll, this bass is 23 1/2" in length!

A 8.4 & 8.9 lb I've caught both where just a hair over 25", so I agree with above girth has allot to do with this.

This bass is 14.08 lbs!

23 3/4" girth ;)

I would say 21"-26" it would be a skinny 26" and a pretty darn fat 21". I caught a 24.25" LMB last year that was just a few ounces shy of 9 lbs, and that fish did not have a big belly but it was super healthy...

The fish in my avatar was 21.5" long and 17" around and went 7.76 pounds. I caught one in January the same year that was 24.5" long but only 14" around that weighed 7.51 pounds. So it can vary a lot depending on the girth.

Wish I had some experience there to tell you about.  In NH that is a VERY large fish and I am not one of the privileged few to have attained that prize. Maybe this year!

I recently read an interesting past article on the Bassresource site called "Are my Bass Overpopulated," by Dave Willis and Bob Lusk. It contains two tables, one metric and the other in inches, that compare length and weight of LMB. They can tell you how fat or skinny your bass is, and therefore how well fed the bass in a given pond are. The article and tables should precisely answer Chris S's question.

(By the way, I wish the Bass Resource articles had the published date listed. How do you know if an article is new or from 20 years ago? Especially when it comes to technology, it would be nice to know.)

It is all about the girth. I have caught 6 over 8 lbs in Maine, only one was longer the 24 inches.

8 lb bass average length should be 23.55 inches, according to the tables.

i will let you know when i get my 8lber here in NH. Its gonna come. Shane will let you know what a 10lb 10oz measures later this spring. Unless Mainebass beats him to her.
