Can't Decide On New Reel

Featured Replies

I have a dilemma. I have narrowed down which new reel I want. I'm either going with the Abu Garcia STX or the Lews Tournament Pro. Both in 6.4.1. I just can't decide. What would you guys recommend?

They may have different inches per turn if that matters.

I'd go with the lews they have really reclaimed their glory

the lew's tp is a sweet reel.  i have the faster ratio version, but the thing is buttery smooth.  i found mine online for about $145 shipped

I would go with the Lews

Is the faster ratio better for buzz and crankbaits?

Why not both   :bushy-browed:

Tournament pro would be my choice. Greet reel.

I had a gen 3 stx and had some issues with it. It was awesome before the issues

Anyway i got rid of it and got the tourny pro. Love that reel! Casts and retrieves just as nice and smooth as the stx did and the carbon fiber handle is a nice touch. Very nice reel

Lews

faster will be good with the buzzbaits, but most like a slower retrieve with medium and deep diving cranks.  i have a 6:1 shimano citica i use for cranks, but the 7:1 lew's tp is perfect for buzzbaits/spinnerbaits for me.

This is the only correct answer.  :teeth3:

Hands down the LEWS TTPRO. I had both reels at the same time and I kept my TTPRO and substituted the STX with another kicka$$ reel of another brand.

Haven't used the STX but I have the TP. It's a buttery smooth reel and is fairly light. Another option in this price range is the Curado I, which I hope to be picking one up soon.

Haven't handled the new STX. I did like the Gen 2 models though. I really liked my TP's though.

I have the Team and Team Pro which are basically the same thing as the Tournament Pro with weight differences and cosmetics. I have taken them apart for pre season prep. I have spooled them and casted them off the water.

I'm very impressed with what I see so far. I've casted them into the wind, with the wind, flipped, back-hand...light lures, heavy lures...can't go wrong with either, but bang for buck IMO is going to Lew's.

UPDATE: I actually went a different path and got the lew's BB1 Pro in 7.1.1. I'm new to baitcasters so the braking system is going to be easier for me dial in and adjust. I also read a lot more about the gear ratios and determined the 7.1.1 will be better for the baits I throw. Also this is only my second baitcaster and first over $100 so I'm excited to get out and practice in the snow.
