Line Conditioner

Featured Replies

Is line conditioner such as KVD L&L really necessary? What does it help? Will it work with Yo Zuri?

I use L&L on every line I fish with. I have several bottles scattered in the house, truck, baits, kayak, tackle bags, etc. It's one of those things that says what it does and does what it says. It's a must use item for me.

I'm also a believer, when it comes to mono or fluorocarbon, but I haven't really noticed any significant improvement when using braid. Have you JF?

For typical braids that lack a coating, it helps retain color. For braid with a coating, it keeps that coating longer and slows "break in." I actually like some lines broken in, and others like brand new. For the latter, I pretreat the spools before filling reels, and the former I treat after broken in.

For fluorocarbon or mono do you spray the line on the spool, reel or run the line through a rag sprayed with conditioner while spooling.

You can do it either way. I just spray a couple times onto the spool. It helps a lot with memory.

Spray the spool and let it dry, per the instructions.

Yo-Zuri.is a large diameter line, line conditioners can't change that.

TangleFree is a liquide line conditioner in 2 oz plastic squeeze bottle that you apply a few drops onto the reel spooled line as needed and works to help keep the wet and conditioned.

The question is whether line conditioner is necessary and the answer is no.  It does work and I've used it, but warm water works too.  When soaking my line for a few minutes my reels spool up with no coiling, the line still needs to be trolled out as conditioner or warm water does not correct line twist.

Although there are no official standards, Ande Fishing Line might be the proxy since it is

credited with more World Records than all other lines combined. I believe it is the only line

approved out of the box by the IGFA.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid has a smaller diameter than Ande Premium:

KVD Line & Lure Conditioner makes a significant difference in line management.

Whether it is necessary is a matter of opinion. Can you get away without it? Yes. But I can get along without sliced bread too.

Side note, Batson makes a product that I'm looking forward to trying. It comes in a disposable wipe. One for line, and one for gear. I'll keep you in the loop.

Tip when spooling...

Soak one of your significant others nylon's with whatever conditioner you decide on, and run your line through that while spooling.

You'll use a lot less as it won't soak into a cotton rag, sock etc.

What is important with IGFA is break strength vs rated pound test, they test the line you submit for a line to be class record. Both Andy and Maxima promote line class records, I know because I had a line class record for about 1 year! You either love or hate a line based on how it performs for you and that is all that matters.

I used Maxima line for decades, it's a high memory line and the reason I changed.

Buy McCoy and you don't need it. :)

I swear by KVD L&L for FC and Mono. Never tried on braid.
