What'd You Go To School For? What Are You Doing Now?

Featured Replies

Howdy, been a while. But last time I was really active I liked most of y'all so I decided to grace you with my presence again.

I got real lucky and got into an apprenticeship program for product design engineering in a part of the automotive industry here in Michigan. It's not what I thought I'd be doing (I decided against professional fishing because I'm sure I'd win so much people would start to hate), but I do enjoy working on CAD and making things. Down the road in 10-20 years, I'm not sure if it's still what I'll want to be doing, or if I'll have moved on.  So just for SnGs....

Did you make a big career change, or do something completely different than what you went to school for?

I was in school for Criminal Justice for a whole month before I got a call for an interview from the local sheriff's department, been doing it for 9 years now.

BA in English and Masters Degree in communications and I work for a magazine. I've worked on several other magazines over the last 20+ years. All fishing or outdoor magazines.

But I owned a tackle store, guided, and sold boats too before getting back in to magazines.

Yep I go to school. Right now, I'm learning the digestive, reproductive, respirative, circulatory, and nervous systems of a crayfish, not to mention the fact that I'm dissecting one today.

Don't you *** me?

Once I found my path, I went full bore and received my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and I will be entering my 23 yr of working in my industry come this August.

I'm doing what I went to school for, I'm a mechanical engineer.

Yep. I'm a little behind but catching up rapidly. I'm really good at science and have an A average, but I don't care for learning something that in depth.

Well, I can tell you I REALLY hate that stuff.....

Dissections are just awful, lab reports are horrible to.

Honestly I would love to go out and catch a frog or a crawdad in the creek, dig up a worm, and dissect them. But the ones that have been sitting in a box in my house for a year and who knows how long before that smell terrible and are just pathetic.

I was in school for Geology and became a d**n electrician. :(

My first career was as a chef. After 12 years in kitchens, I went back to school to change careers. Received my undergrad degree in Medical Science then specialized in Immunology in grad school. I've been doing research in Pediatric Immunology since.

I got a BBA and am now a project manager for a fortune 100 health insurance company.  If you've seen the movie Office Space, you've witnessed my work life.

BS and MS in Plastics Engineering from Umass Lowell - currently a senior program manager for a tier 2 in the Automotive industry.

Bachelors in Computer Science currently a systems engineer.  I make all of your fancy computer equipment work together.

Sitting in English Comp right this second preparing for upcoming finals.

I am currently attending Life University's School of Hard Knocks.

The admission process was very easy and it's been an interesting, fun and sometimes brutal course of study.

The lessons all seem to be connected to each other in one way or another and the homework has proven to be the most important part.

I'm in no hurry to finish and am actually trying to make it last as long as I can.

Anticipating a most rewarding graduation ceremony, as I understand it, the diplomas have tremendous longevity as they are made out of stone.

Currently working in the Marine industry, not quite what I had planned but I'm utilizing what I went to school for and spent a lot of time on the water to recieve.  Started in this field 23 years ago, flopped around like most 20 somethings do until you figure out what you really want to do.  Only switched from the fishing side to the idustrial because I needed a steady paycheck after becoming a parent.  Working in Gulf of Mexico in the oil and gas industry is a long way from the plans of being on a fishing yacht in Cabo.

Graduated with a degree in Human Resources...spent 20 years in retail management (non HR related)  and the last 15 years working in radio.

I went to baran institute of technology which is now Lincoln tech for automotive repair did it for a few years then went on to teach diesel tech at a vocational school. Hated it when I was turning wrenches making great money loved it when teaching it not making crap for money idk how I supported a family on it.

Now I'm a shift supervisor in a fiberglass shop breathing in fumes and dust all night long with two apprentices under me and three other employees that do their own thing. Not what I went to school for but I like it and I'm good at it so.

Went to school to play baseball and wound up getting a criminal justice degree. Got hired as a deputy sheriff 6 months after I graduated and been doing that for 8+ years now.

Went to school for Political Science then straight to law school after. Been out 3 years and practicing primarily family law ever since. So I can appreciate Raider's rants, raves, and tribulations. I pride myself in being the only lawyer in town with a Ranger in the parking lot, in tow, from April till October.

Go to techincial college right now to be a HVAC tech.
