Boat Owners Worst Nightmare

Recommended Posts

It is safe to say my buddy is having a pretty rough week. Don't text and drive or you could ruin someone's pride and joy. Thank god everyone walked away unharmed, the same cannot be said about the boat or truck. Doesn't matter how well you drive someone out there is a much worse and distracted.

Ouch, that's a bummer. Glad nobody was hurt.

In the 3rd pic you can see the blood that the Ranger spilled onto the concrete.

Hull is still good but its probably a total loss.

That really sucks! I'm surprised everything else looks as good as it does though considering they snapped the motor clean off.

Hull *might* still be good, but I wouldn't trust it after that kind of hit.  Sucks for him too.  Hopefully his insurance takes good care of him, but being an older boat, I would hate to see what they are going to offer.

that sucks big time. For what theyre gonna give him, he'll be able to buy a new Touch 12 and a canoe.

And I thought I had a bad day Saturday because when I snagged a crank bait and could not free. I take my lure retriever and what do you know- end up loosing my true retriever and snapping off my crank bait. I would be interested to see if insurance steps up and does the right thing because that boat although old looked like it was cherried.

Boat was new to him in August. Before that it was babied. Garage kept and everything. Perfect boat. Hopefully he can plead his case with the insurance company.

That sucks even worse because he had to pay more than book for it, its a Ranger. They always sell for over book price. At least if he was the original owner, he would have got his use out of it before being hosed.

Very glad to hear there were no injuries.

Keep us posted as to what happens with the insurance claim if he doesn't mind sharing.

If he had agreed value then he should get that amount if it is a total loss....at least that is what I would expect.

Dang. Bummer.

One of my boys and I were in a left

turn lane at a red light. In the other lanes

were a car, then a motorcycle.

We hear screeching and a lady plowed

into the back of the motorcycle. The rider

was ok as he heard it and jumped off,

but still.

Glad everyone was ok, suppose insurance

will cover the boat.

I watched that happen at a light several years ago, still remember that crunch.

I would not trust that hull after that kind of an impact, as much as your buddy might want to and as much as the insurance company isn't going to give him for it. I've had some people barely dodge my motor in bad traffic or follow super close. Someone hits my boat I have now and I may end up seeing what it's like from the other side of my job.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks like the score for this one is Ranger 1 - Car 0

Darren, yes, the watercraft policy for physical damage to the boat and its contents will kick in.

But the boa owner also has the option of bringing legal action against the car's owner and driver.

When you bring action against an automobile insurance company they will want to pay you "Actual Cash Value" of the boat and motor, meaning they will depreciate it to the lowest possible denominator possible.

The watercraft insurer may do the same but at least you can negotiate better with your own insurance company than the other vehicle's insurance carrier.

Yes, it does not seem fair. You need a new boat. But remember, insurance is designed to put back into the place you were before the accident so if you have a 2001 Mercury 200 that is damaged in an accident with an "at fault driver" their insurance company will price a 2001 Mercury 200 with the same amount of hours on it and either pay you (and take the motor) that amount or try to find a replacement motor for you to install on the boat.

Not easy dealing with the GIECO's and Allstate's of the world but you have to fight to get as much as you can and they sue the car's owner for any balance an hope for the best in a "crap shoot" court of law.

Yea, right! Dream on Alice, you're in wonderland now.

With all the damage being to the boat, it's going to be hard to convince much of anyone in a court there were personal injuries involved, and as mentioned, the insurance companies are only going to be looking at replacement price at their fair market value. If he was one of those that financed it forever to keep the payments low, and owes more than the boats worth, he might not be a happy camper when all the dust has settled.
