I am a Jig and plastic fisherman and spend 90% of my time fishing those baits, the other time is spent on topwaters and frog's. I am going to be going fishing with a buddy this weekend and was told where we are going he has been doing very well on the Strike King 8.0. crankbaits. I have pretty much any rod I would need and would expect to use a 5.3.1 reel with at least 17# to 20# line for this large bait but I'm unsure of which rod would be the best.

I just went and bought 8 of those and I believe they are 3/4 Oz Cranks. I'm going to be limited on how many rod's and reels I will be taking because I'll be fishing in his boat from the back and not my own so I wanted to ask you guys what would you throw this bait on? I was thinking a 7'6 MH-Fast rod but was really unsure. Thanks for the help.

I fish mine on a 7 ft mh bps graphite rod and 20lb mono. The 8.0 is big and weighs around 1.5oz

Thanks for the info. The crankbait I bought said on the package 3/4 Oz so I'm not sure we are talking about the same one.

The first time I fished one I thought man this thing feels heavy for the 3/4 oz rating. I did some reading on some other threads where guys were saying the 8.0 actually weighs about 1.5 oz. I haven't weighed one myself but that seemed more accurate for the way it felt when fishing

I have weighed it and it's 1.5 oz.

I throw it on a 7'6 Veritas Winch MH rod with #14 mono but I can see a flipping stick style rod working well to drive 1/0 trebles.

I've been throwing them on my 7'6" HF C-Rig rod.  I just got a Dobyns 805 RM that I'm going to try them on but I haven't yet.  I think they're too heavy for most cranking rods.

I've seen the swuarebill ones do they make a deep diver other then the 8 xd? I use to throw 10 xd. On a 76 mh veritas winch rod with no Problems. Tough I was always scared it might snap my rod.

I've been using a phenix 7'7 ml inshore rod for it. Rated 12 to 25 pound test. Works great with a older shimano Bantum and 17 pound suffix siege

I throw mine on a 7' 3" M/F, basically a pitching rod, with a 200BSF and 20lb Pline. They have big trebles that you don't have to worry about tearing out and that take a lot more force to drive home.

 Soooo.........You're saying I should buy a Dobyn's?    

7'0 or 7'6" XH Micro Magic will easily cast both 8XD and 10XD.  Heavy action in both lengths will suffice for 8XD but is over powered by the 10XD.  Can recommend 30 or 40 pound braid as I have had great results using the same producing long casts and the strength to get baits back from snags.

 

This is an awesome summer technigue on Toledo Bend.  Have fun with come mid-June through September.

I plan on trying my Lew Custom Speed Stick Magnum 1 for the big cranks. I have two Team Lews crank rods for lighter baits. I also have a HMG MHF I can use.

Yesterday was one of the best trips I've had on Toledo Bend in a very long time. My friend new what he was talking about and he may have just started my crankbait fishing days. We caught 14 bass but here is the amazing part, our best five Bass was 34.7. We had a 9 pounder and two over 8 pounds. All were caught and released back into the lake. The Strike King 8.0 is for real. the bait is huge but it hunt's and doesn't just stay tracking like a regular crankbaits does. It will dart and hunt and I believe that causes the bass to strike. Thanks every one for the help and info on which rod to use. 

 

 

  I used a 7'7" Heavy Duckett White Ice with a 5.4:1 Tatula. I'm going to order either a Duckett 7'11 White Ice cranking stick or a Orochi XX Casting Rod 7'11" Launcher rod that I'm going to try out on those baits. Thanks for the help.

The 8.0 is definatley not 3/4oz, I throw mine on my 7 hf Mojo Bass for now, hopefully I will get a boat and be able to transport longer rods soon, once I do I will be using a 7'6 MHMF, that will also become my deep crank rod

I know Greg hackney throws them on his flipping stick which is 7'11hm...he used it last year on his flw win
