Searched but couldn't find anything on it. What reel oil/lube do you guys use? I've always used just a drop of gun oil on the spool...

REM oil for spool bearings-Yellow rocket fuel is also top notch. I prefer the lowest viscosity I can find for ceramics.

 

Daiwa Blue oil for anything else that requires oil. 

I use Lucas reel oil. Works great.

Not that red stuff; it can stiffen and leave a hard to remove red "paste."  The Reel Mech used to charge extra when he had to service a reel with that lube.  I use reel butter, but any sewing machine oil, shaver oil, gun oil, or clear/not dyed reel oil should be fine.  Any are a heck of a lot better than none, which is what many reels see.

That's right, there's magic in any of them. A quality low-vis oil is fine for bearings. The key is to keep parts clean and apply a lubbricant appropriate for the application.

TSI 321 on bearings after cleaning... then after a day or so, I add one drop of yellow Rocket Fuel or Berkley's oil if I need to slow or smooth them.

I use the Shimano oil for everything that requires oil.

Extra virgin olive oil.

Tsi 301 or 321..i recommend using the same brand for everything to avoid cross contamination wich could make one or both not work very well....

If you use the tsi one has a solvent in it so let them sit for a couple hours so it dissapates then a shot of compresses air to blow out whats left and your good for at least half the season if not longer...awesome stuff!!

No TSI301 whatsoever in reels.  You want to use TSI321.  Personally, Shimano Bantam oil works great in 90% of all applications and is pretty easy to come by.

The solvent in 301 can damage some plastic parts, there's no need for it. The cross contamination of lubricants is a bit of an urban legend in that it's blown way out of proportion. The soaps/ thickeners in greases can cause the oil to separate out if mixed but even that wouldn't be catastrophic if you do regular maintenance.

I use exactly what you use.

Im aware of that,thats why i let the bearings sit overnight to evaporate and them blow them out with compressed air

Do the plastic cages melt or do they hold up to the solvent? There's no purpose to using the solvent and oil mixture when cleaning a reel. Use a degreaser, wash and rinse thoroughly, dry , and THEN lubricate. The shortcut may work in your specific situation, but its bad advice.

I just cannot believe with all the years of development of lubricating oils specifically for machinery like fishing reels that olive oil could be as good at lubricating a fishing reel as "fishing reel oil" by someone like Shimano.  Just cannot believe it.

When i bought it i didnt realize it had solvent in it but read that it evaporates in a few hours so i tried it and worked fine, also i wasnt cleaning my reel, just the bearings. I dont use it anymore and use the 321 now but i still let it sit overnight to give it time to bond with the molucules in the ss before blowing it out and putting them ack in the reel..

I guess i assumed that someone with plastic cages would see the word solvent and they would not use it and i shouldnt assume such things so for that i apoligize, should have thought about it more before posting...
