So when y'all tie to certain baits that have the split ring, do y'all tie directly to the lure or to the ring?

Sorry if this is a dumb question/been asked 100 times but I'm just curious.

Vast majority of the time, i tie to the ring. Only time i tie directly to the lure is when i want to suppress some of the action of the lure.

The way I see it, the lure companies want their baits to be effective so you'll buy more. So in my mind they aren't going to add something to their bait if it would be more effective without it. If there's a ring on it, that's what I'm tying to. 

What Blue said. I always tie to a split ring if it's there. 

If it's there I also tie to it.

Last trip out I removed the split ring from a lucky strike Rick clunn crankbait to try and subdue the action. It would not run straight tied directly to the lure .

I guess I'm in the minority.  I remove all the split rings and tie directly to a Duo-Lock snap.

One problem with using a snap is the tendency NOT to retie your bait often enough, but fear not... when you loose a good fish put the blame on a bad batch of line!

Very true. I use a snap to try different stuff until I find what is working that day, then tie direct. Sometimes I'll end up using a snap the entire time, but I always retie the snap each night, or before the next time I go fishing, and I'm always testing and checking the knot along the way.

only time i differ is if i'm using the norman speed clips, then i tie to the clip and attach that directly to the bait, no ring.

I haven't had issue with snapping to the split run myself. And yeah, everyone says you don't retie enough, but you learn when it needs to be done, and that's not every time you want to change baits.

and you don't have to worry about the split ring cutting your line.
