Can one of you tell me roughly the going rate to ship a rod if I were to sell it on this site?  I have a tube from Tackle Warehouse it would be shipped in.

Good luck with the recycled cardboard tube.  I've had no success getting rods to my destination in one piece using cardboard.  All I use now is PVC.

It all depends on how far it has to travel. There is also a balloon charge through USPS if the the LxWxH exceeds a certain number. Then if you need to add insurance there's another charge. If shipped a lot of rods and it usually runs $25-30. It's been less before, but also more.

I would say close to 15 - 40 per rod for reasons that rippinlips states. Just shipped a rod about 4 hours away and cost $26 for a 7'1 rod.

I recently received a 2 piece rod via FedEx.... It left the destination as a 1 piece BTW!!

I use FedEx exclusively for rods and it usually around $30 + -.

Fwiw the max for most shippers is 108". I just shipped a 9' Rod in a 110" tube. The fed ex clerk insisted on charging an oversize charge. Hold on to your hat ..... $87 NY to MD if it weren't a 30 mile drive each way to drop it off I'd have chopped an inch off the Rod and 2" off the tube.

I definetly agree with this. One thing I always do when I ship regardless of the tube material, is tape the handle and tip to the side of the tube and wrap the tip in something. I think taping the rod to the tube protects it a little more when bouncing around.

As someone who received a broken rod this week that was shipped in a cardboard tube,but it was triangled shaped,and it was broke about five inches above the handle instead of the tip.If  you ship in a pvc tube with proper precautions it will more than likely arrive safely.

UPS cost me about $28 from IL to California. That being said I was charged city taxes so its probably more like $26. Still better to ship with a pvc tube like dobyns does.

I go to Lowes and buy a 10' section of 3" thin walled PVC Pipe and I use a hacksaw to cut to the desired length and they also sell (at my Lowes) these sweet little caps that fit snugly over the ends but I still tape then on just to be safe. These are real caps and not the little saucer shaped end caps that are loose fitting.

In most cases a 2" tube will accomodate a casting rod and I need 3" for the higher guides on a spinning rod. Central vaccum pipe is thin walled and lighter. It works if you can find it. I usually get stuck just using the schedule40. 

Print the postage online for USPS. ~$15 for shipping and $7 for a piece of 2" pvc and good endcaps. If you use TW tubes, cut them down to under 8'.
