Ealier in day also snagged this Northern Pike while fishing in local pond here in central VA. I didn't think northerners were this far south, never even heard of one around here:

Wow, you might have something there.  That thing is tiny.

Your record fish looks like a crappie.

It's a chain pickerel. We're moving down south on ya brother we heard you have too many fish down there.lol.

Please do not get discouraged, there are bigger ones out there

Crap:( thought it was a bass, still has to be a record.

Fun day fishing though, first time ever using jerk baits and I snagged the nothern and caught two bass. The second large mouth was a nice 2lb'er that hit the jerk bait as soon as it hit the water.  Had zero luck with jigs in matts and pads though.

I've heard of pickerel never chain pickerel though, are these non-native species to south and will they hurt bass population? What should I use to catch these? As you can see I snagged this one on his side?

Funny thing is after cast my line broke at reel, so I held rod and line in left hand and was stripping line with right hand to get lure back when I felt this tug on line.

Watch out thell bite ya. They are fun to catch. Big ones are a hoot to catch. Use a short steel leader.

I don't think they hurt the bass population.

Congrats on the new record catch. Did you weigh it in and measure it for the taxidermy guy to make a mount.

Looks like you beat my own crankbait snagging record from earlier this summer, a 3 inch brook silverside.

My biggest PB chain pickerel is 32" so far.

Btw, I think the snakeheads are never going to take over our waters with the bass, chain pickerel, great northern pike and our muskies. All are awesome game fish.

Pickerel are fun as hell to catch lol.

They put up a great fight, but just watch your fingers.

They also taste great in a pinch, as you just have to watch for the tiny y bones, and filet them like pike.

Taxidermists charge about ten dollars an inch so this mount might cost.....what?  5 dollars?

The little guy is a juvenile bluegill. White bass around my parts will absolutely gorge themselves on those things to the point that they'll start to puke them all back up when you catch one.

Agreed, looks like bluegill fry to me, but it's hard to tell 100% when they're that small. It's not a bass for sure.

Agree with the bottom fish being a chain pickerel also. Very similar to a pike, just don't get a big and can live in warmer climates.

When we would use a drag net on the beach in saltwater trying to get shiners for bait we would catch little tiny sandflat fish and little founders. Not many but enough to see them.

The biggest chain pickerel so far I caught were between 29"/32". We have a monster were they stock trout since he's gorging on the trout it's either a monster chain pickerel or a very large great northern pike. This lake does connect to a larger lake up stream that has great northern pike.

The pickerel/pike seem to make darting runs during the battle of reeling them in. The fight is fun.

That's the size I've been catching in my tournaments lately! :sad-012:

I caught the bass that feeds on bluegill those size last week too.

I caught some crappie a couple weeks ago and when I filleted them, those size fish poured out of the gut.

We have those pickerel, as well as redfin, way down here in SC, but I haven't caught any. Not invasive. Our record is 6#. I think some people call them jackfish. I hear they'll ruin your hollow body frogs.

Congrats on the record! Lol!

We have pickerel in several fisheries in SW Virginia. There is a series of flood control ponds in Giles County that are full of them. A bag of Flukes and some tough line make for a great day.

That they do, but I've still used the same frog many a times after even with the puncture wounds... things don't sink.

Lol I got one to
