Kayak Net

Featured Replies

OK, this one is for the kayak anglers on the site.

What fishing nets are you using in your kayak? I have a terrible mesh net that treble hooks get burried in. It literally takes me 15-20 minutes to get the trebles out.

I don't use a net. i should probably get one. I'm also interested in hearing other people's answers.

I almost always just lip the fish (or grab behind the head, if it's a toothy bugger), although the majority of the time I'm fishing with single hooks instead of trebles.

I never did either. My wife bought a 15 dollar net a year ago and never used it. I took it on the kayak after losing a few Barely hooked fish on 2 outings and it's still almost more trouble than it was worth.

I've used the mesh nets, and while convenient, yes, they

can be a bear to unhook trebles from.

Since I lost two of those, I have been using a cheap nylon

net with a 3' aluminum body (floats) that you can get for

like $10 at Walmart. Works fine, though not my net of

choice, frankly. I'd prefer a rubber net, or a rubber coated

net.

Anyhow, you can find longer and slightly larger fly nets

that can be great for yak fishing. Still light and not overly

bulky.

Then there's the Leverage net. Believe JFrancho uses one.

I've handled them in a local kayak shop and they are sweet.

Think they're around $75 give or take. Nice nets.

I never bring a net in the 'yak.  I lip the bass or grab the pike and pickerel behind the head (although I don't know what would happen if I hooked a really big pike).  It sure is easy when you're right at water level!   I used to bring along my fish grippers but since I never used them, I don't bring them any more.

I guess I don't worry much about fish getting away.  I'm not a tournament fisherman, I very rarely keep fish (and never bass), and if they get off at the boat, I sort of like it that they saved me the trouble of unhooking them!

Tight lines,

Bob

Here, Nomad makes gorgeous nets - if you can

call a net thus(?)...

But they're a tad on the $$$ side of things.

I have a folding net I bought from B@%% P#%. Stows under my seat and flips open when I need it.

Nice. do you happen to know the dimensions?

i don't use a net but have a pair of fish grips close by for toothy critters.

I use the Ego small rubber landing net.

Approximately $42.

Hoop size of 14 inches by 16 inches.

Hook/snag free rubber mesh.

Innovative grip design.

Floats. No metal to rust.

Bag depth of 12 inches.

About 36" long.

There used to be a company that made a rubber net that hooks wouldnt get tangled in, that actually flipped out when you grab it.

I saw it on Kayak bassin' but the company no longer makes them.

I have since just gone to a fish grip...It just seems easier for me to deal with than a net that ALWAYS gets snagged and in the way.

Since I got my Fish Grips, I haven't used a net....and haven't missed it once

I use a Dick's "El Cheapo" net. Works great for me, but I rarely use treble baits.

I don't use a net. I use a smaller rod that allows me to bring the big girls right up to the side of the kayak.

I'll often not use a net -- but on the smaller fish.

I've lost a number of bass right off the yak gunnel

within reach of my net, but not my arm.

So it's more of a "safety net", pun intended, for

the bigger gals.

I use a net sometimes, though more often, I use a fish grip or clip attached to a T-Reigns track mount lanyard.  This works great for those online CPR tournaments.  Leave the f\ish in the water, while you get ready to take the pic.

I use net when I fish for smallies and since I have it I always bring mine.  If I forget them then my fish grip will always be in the bag along with my other tools.  The one I use is the Promar collapsible net 16" size and its also nice where you can break it down to stow away plus the snag free net material.

Like others have said I don't use a net. Granted I haven't lost a fish yet, but I do use grips as soon as I can get them close enough for them.

Off the top ofmy head it folds to 24" and is plenty big to handle a 28" pickerel and 3 - 4 pound bass easily.

There are three different sizes, so I'd get over to a local B*** Pr* if you can.

Here's how to land a little trout from a kayak.

I always use a net for anything with trebles as the fish more a little more then I like when i try to grab them.  For everything else I will normally lip them or I just reel them into the foot area of the kayak and go from there.  I keep a couple set of lip grabbers in the kayak  but I really only use them to hold the fish for hook removal or to leave the fish in the water as I get the camera out.

I use this one. I rarely net a bass, only bigger ones on treble hooks. But more often than not, I'm fishing for inshore fish in my kayak, and you'll only lip a speckled trout or Spanish mackeral once.
