A recent addiction to jig fishing has led to me looking for big bites and purposely fishing for size and not numbers. It's really been paying off. It's the only way I can really target larger bass without living on trophy waters and throwing really expensive swimbaits. Nothing of massive size yet, but this 5-pounder hit a Siebert Dredge Jig/Rage Chunk yesterday. Easily could have been a 6+ if she had been eating well.

Jig fishing has paid off well this year from me as well.  Largest fish this year so far was on a jig.  And if you wanted, the 8" Line Thru trout will catch 3-4lb fish as well as larger ones.  Don't have to live on trophy waters to target the larger fish.  And don't have to break the bank either.  Nice fish, keep it up.

I really want to get better using jigs. Have a fun box of them. However, my home lake just doesn't produce in jigs. At least not for me. Caught a few drinks on them but nothing noteworthy and not a lot of numbers. I know part of it is a confidence thing but I have used it repeatedly and unless I am swimming it, it just doesn't catch me much fish. Sucks, because I love watching the videos of people setting the hook hard on a jig fish. 

Nice one, Kyle.  There is something very satisfying about catching big fish on jigs.  Maybe it has to do with subconsciously justifying the money spent on a nice, sensitive jig rod!

I am looking to fish with jigs more but have little experience. A question I have is how long do you throw jigs, and how long in-between bites?

 

Are you basically trying to land on fishes nose or extremely close?  How deep is water you mostly throw in?

These questions are all relative. There are days where all I throw is a jig. Bites can be every other cast or can be none all day.

You don't have to land on the nose, however, I do catch a lot of fish on the first initial fall. There are several retrieves to use with jigs.

Depth can be inches out to 40 feet.

That is one addiction to be proud of! I too am a addict and guilty of hoarding more than I will ever use. 18 of the 3700 series boxes and counting!

Like gulfcaptain said, you don't have to break the bank to get into swimbaits. Savage Gear is my favorite of the more affordable swimbaits. You can get several offerings from them for under $20 and in sizes that you don't need specialized gear to throw. 

 

Nothing wrong with a jig though. I'll take a jig over anything, any day. Topwater is fun, but nothing gets me going like that thump.

It's the hookset that gets me. Nothing like slamming into a big one, especially with braid on the reel.
