Checking in from South Bend! Started fishing tournaments last year and I love it! Fish all over including a lot of lakes in southern Michigan. Really glad I found this site! Looking forward to hearing about tight lines throughout the Hoosier state!!

This time of the year are you ice fishing or watching reruns of the Indy 500?

Used to go to the 500 and I will admit that it is the greatest spectacle in racing.

Lots of great memories.

Usually in the winter I spend time skiing. Not much for ice fishing, not that there are any great waters for it anyways. If I had a private pond that I managed though I would definitely be ice fishing on it!

Not a Hoosier, but I do fish Lake Shafer and the Tippecanoe for a few miles north a couple weekends a year. Just wondering if anybody has had much luck there. We generally manage a few small ones but the boat traffic is absolutely brutal.  Try to fish the shorelines and you're getting battered into them by the wake. Only chance is back in the offshoots/coves which generally get a ton of fishing pressure.

Maybe I need to get out there during the week...

If you go to Shafer/Freeman during the week or in the fall there is hardly any boat traffic, and there are huge smallie in those lakes, plus  bonus wipers.

Hello, I live outside Peru IN.  My boat and most of my fishing gear stays at our seasonal canpsite outside Roshester IN.  Thats were I do the most of my largemouth fishing.  I always have a few rods here at home or in the car just incase the itch hits me and I want to try for smallies in the wabash or crappie over at the Missinawa spillway.

Is that Lakeview campgrounds, I have fond memories of being a kid there back in the 80s.

The fishing itch gets worse by the day haha... Never have been huge on ice fishing... So I keep getting updates on how thick the ice is and I'm waiting anxiously for the report of no more ice haha.... However my fishing partner and I have made plans to take a "pre-season" fishing trip at the end of march!! We are making the 7 hour trip down to Kentucky Lake and fishing that for a few days!!!

Oh and I bought a "new to me" bass boat this weekend haha!!

Awesome response guys! Glad to see so many Hoosiers on the boards. Also, glad I finally found some time to sit down and do some reading on hear. The first month of 2016 has been extremely hectic!

I'm just north of Indy. Just getting back into fishing, had some good luck in our local pond Xmas & New Years but not so much at Morse yet. Going to Reelfoot in March hoping for some good times. Looking forward to warmer weather.

I am from west central Indiana.  Have any of you ever fished Lake Waveland?  If so, would you be willing to share some good locations for bass fishing?  I have a good map of the lake that I have been looking at but need some help.  I just have that strong itch to get out this year.  Thanks in advance.

I've fished it for years (and years). Bad news is you've missed out on the easy fishing out there. Was a bass factory up until about 2 years ago. Getting tougher and tougher to make a big catch out there now. Still a fun fishery though. Stay shallow in the spring and fall, then move to the breaks in the summer. The area around the ramp as well as the dam gives up bass all year long.

This is a more statewide club:

I also know of Central Indiana Kayak Anglers in my part of the state. Not sure of anything down in the Clarksville/Louisville area, but may look into it.

Hello,

I'm in Wabash, and am pretty close to Peru, Huntington, North Manchester, and Marion.  Local reservoirs are the Salamonie and Mississinewa, with plenty of smallish rivers, lakes and ponds.

Not sure how I didn't see this thread before..!

Regards,

Josh

Tyler, you look familiar.  You didn't by chance go to Northfield HS in Wabash County, did you?

I grew up in Monroe Indiana and attended Adams Central from kendergarden all the way to graduation.  I didn't move this dirrection until 5-6 years ago.  I did work overnights at the Walmart in Wabash up until October of last year so if you went shopping between 9 pm and 6 am there is a good chance you saw me there or maybe we crossed paths fishing, my regular spots and Mississinewa spilway and the omer cole public access sight.  I've been looking for better sights to fish since I moved here but there are just so many no tresspassing signs around that I tend to gravitate to public access or go up to the campground where my boat lives.

Have you had any luck this year?  I've been out a few times and came up empty. My father in law was doing really well at red bridge threw the ice lots of slab crappies and a few undersized smallies and walleye.

You know, Walmart sounds about right.  I was running my business on third shift there for a bit, and would come into Walmart then when I needed stuff.  My Aunt-in-Law, Glenna, is a manager out there on third shift.

I swear you had a twin at Northfield High, though, about a year older than me!

I've not had any luck this year so far.  Yesterday was the first time I saw any fish in the shallows, and most of the lake was still frozen.  Just in late December, though, I was slaying largish (15") smallies and 20" or so walleye out of the Wabash.  I don't ice fish.  No offense at all to those who do; I just can't fish without casting to a wide variety of areas.

Til I can fully repair the boat, I stick with shore fishing and public access, but my trick for that is to outfit and hike to places folks don't usually go, or can't go.  Still, there are a few places that I need a boat for, and I'm thinking about a canoe if one happens along.  Just better for my style than is the deep-v I grew up with.

I know Salamonie is slightly longer drive for you, but you might try it.  I'm hoping for lower water levels this year, and combined with last year's levels, the fishing should be really great!  The Wabash is producing, too, and I'm looking forward to that.

There's a public access to the Wabash River outside of Wabash City on the way to Peru on Old 24.  I was fishing it when everything else was frozen, but despite plenty of dead and dying shad, nothing bit.  It interests me as to why they're not more active there.

I do have a twin brother but he also went to Adams Central.  If there was another one of us at Northfield it must have been a long lost triplet lol.  The funny thing is there was a Josh Smith a grade or two behind me at AC and when I first saw your screen name I wondered if you were him.

I have fished Salamone a few times in the past but only from my father in law's boat. If I'm going to drive that far too fish I usually head north to Rochester and fish from at my seasonal camp site.

I did pretty well last year in the Wabash when the water was really high.  Haven't had much luck since.
