Trolling motor upgrade question

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Just wanting to know some information on my new trolling motor upgrade. I'm putting on a new Minn Kota Maxxum 65lbs thrust 24 volt system. I'm going to rewire everything since i have to put the batteries in a different location. I just need to know should i go with 6 or 8 gauge wire and do i only need one breaker on the system? Should the breaker be a 60 amp? Also i will be running the system with Optima Blue Top Batteries. Thanks for any help.

I can never think of a good reason for going with thinner wire...

#6 is standard rigging on most high end bass boats as of late. #8 was the norm and is still used a lot. #10 was used quite a bit on aluminum entry level boats of years past, but I think most manufacturers have upgraded to #8.

Length of run matters and amp draw.  I go one size larger than recommend.  That's just me.  6 should be fine!

Theoretically,# 8 should be fine, but I agree with Angry John, you cant go wrong with #6
