Where do you need to improve ?

Featured Replies

Put me in the DS crowd.I`ll spend 10 mins tying a rig ,throw it 3 times ,not get bit and mumble some @#$%^&* words and belittle myself for even thinking I could catch some thing on it. I may try it again in 2018

So if someone asks me if I want to go dropshoting,I`ll say no,I`d rather go fishing.

Some very funny posts here,thanks

I can't catch fish on a dropshot, just can not do it. Not sure if it's just not an effective option on our lakes or what, but I'd like to get better at it.

  • I need to improve my confidence level and decision making when what I'm using isn't working. I'm always second guessing myself that I have the right bait tied on. Example..If throwing a T rig for

I need to improve on getting out the house!

Stupid weather ;)

Amen to that! Dang winter haha

Every aspect there is to bass fishing. I don't care how well I've done or how much confidence I may build, I will always need to improve. When we think we are the best or have mastered anything to the art of bass fishing, that's when we start becoming less of an angler.

3 - Rat-L-Traps - Again, I have considerable success with similar lures - rattling square bills and shallow divers, but I just don't get the bites others seem to get with lipless crankbaits; slow, medium, ripping retrieves, dead stick, yo-yo, whatever, I have very, very little luck with them.  It isn't landing them, it's that I just don't get bit.

EGS

I never got much on them either. I was fishing an older hydroelectric lake with little in the way of vegetation. Then I started fishing a smaller local reservoir with a lot of grass on the bottom. My buddy told me to get some in gold. We don't rip them back to the boat unless the fish are really chasing. Usually we reel them just fast enough to stay out of the grass on the bottom. Now there's always one tied on. Bigger bass like it too. As you can see it's kinda worn.

They say the Rat-L-Trap kills them at Guntersville...I suppose that's why.

Patience like was said. Force myself to stay with one bait to get confident.  And more cow bell. (drop shot)   ?

My buddy does a little better than me using a Cotton Cordell Super Spot in metallic gold. It's a deeper gold color. Besides that it looks almost exactly the same. I don't know if it's the color, the design or the fact I fish from his back seat, but he seems to catch a few more and bigger fish.

Anyway, if I cast this one into a tree, I'd have to climb the tree to get it back.

Deep water.

idk

i also need to improve on reading structure and choosing a lure for that type of structure.

Fishing deep for sure

I'm terrified of boats! I think my goal is to finally go deep sea fishing and face my fear!

What a great thread.

1. I need to get better at jig fishing. I rarely throw them and so have not caught many fish on them.

2. Skipping a bait with a bait caster. This is the year that I learn that technique'

3. Fishing a Ned rig. I have never done that at all, I will try it this year, especially once the lakes heat up in summer.

4. Reading my electronics. I probably only understand about 25% of what is displayed. It's time I really learned.

I think that will be enough for one summer. See me again next year and I will let you know if I got these and moved on to others.

On edit:

I totally agree with you in every point you made. I believe that finess presentations are where I should concentrate my efforts. My DS is the only thing that really works for me. I'm going to start using the ned rig also.^^^

OK

I restarted my Bass fishing a year and a half ago after not fishing at all for 10+ years. I also restarted as a boater. In the past, as a bank fisherman, I really thought I knew how to fish but the last year has been some what of a humbling experience.

So, a few thoughts: First thing is I really need to learn is just exactly where the fish are when I'm out there. I need to learn where to actually begin to start looking and I really need to learn how to use my electronics. I know for fact that I'm not going to catch anything if I'm throwing my bait in places where the fish are not. So it's electronics and boat position along with just having a general idea where the fish should be at that time of year and that particular time of day.

Second thing is I need to perfect 2 or 3 presentations and stick to them. Master them and gain confidence.

I have to agree with those who cannot understand why some on this forum either don't like to drop shot or cannot do it. This past year was the first time I ever used a drop shot and If it were not for that presentation my year would have sucked way worse than it did. And believe me it sucked royal. But I will figure this thing out. :)
