I'm from Europe and there is a growing popularity of hand made tackles here. Almost every fisherman tries to create an artificial lure by himself. And of courese.... It is MUCH better to catch a fish with a tackle created by yourself. I was wondering if it is similar in the USA?

Creating lures usually falls into 2 categories, tinkering with lures we already know work to make them a little better and making lures from scratch; designing, making and finishing.

The tinkering category is a long standing habit of bass anglers custom painting hard lures, buying ready made molds like jigs and soft plastics creating a wide range of colors and materials form supplier like Barlow's Tackle in Texas. We have several custom lure painters available that paint hard baits like deep diving crankbaits and upper end swimbaits.

Designing a new lure from a blank paper and developing something new is less common, lures like swimbaits were backyard creations long before commercial lures became available. Most new design lures start in someone garage and get copied or marketed if the lure becomes successful.

Yes it is.....I make some of my own plastics and jigs. Not bragging (OK...i'm tooting my own horn) but my plastic creature bait that i make has been on fire the last two years and its not an exact replica of any other bait out there....My tournament partner and I have done really well on them. It is fun catching bass on your own creation. 

Lots of tackle builders out there. I lobe to tinker with baits and make my own.

Ok, now I see you are into handmade lures too:) For us lure building is mainly creating wobblers - crankbaits, twichbaits, jerkbaits and other very specific lures - like asp lures. Lot of people use ONLY handmade lures for asp or catfish (wells). Flyting is different category. Almost every flyfisherman makes his own flies.

In the middle stands kogut lure. Specially made lure for catching zanders. Fun fact - it was created back in the 80s, following the example of American lures looking like Booyah jigs. SOmeone brought few lures like this from the USA and because it was impossible to buy more of them people started to make their own copies of **** feathers and yarn  

It's still a killer for zander....
