Hooked into this bad boy today using cut bluegill for bait. Bass fishing was slow so I decided to toss a line out and let it sit. Took awhile to get it in but man was I stoked for this fish. I've never caught anything over 6 pounds.

This flathead weighed 23 pounds 14 ounces.

Lmao I was so excited and was panicking to find something to use and that's all I could think of haha. I also took one next to my foot and a water bottle. I wish I wasn't alone so I could have gotten a better picture.

i keep a pair of those gloves around for when im catfishing. keeps from getting my hand all slimey and allows me to grab them in the mouth when their bellies are too fat to get my hand around...

No need for a glove with flatheads, they don't have the bite power of blues or channels. Might lose a little skin, pretty much like a big bass though, little rougher teeth. Trick is to not try to jerk your hand out of the mouth if they start thrashing around. That's a heck of a fight if you've never caught anything over 6 pounds previously. 

I grab a big flathead opposite of the way we all lip bass . I shove my fingers in as far as they will go and grip with the thumb on the outside .

Thanks guys. I plan to go back to that spot soon. There's a guy that swears he caught a 40 pounder there and released it. Hope I can grab that one next time.

Try a live bluegill next time instead of cutbait. While flatheads do readily eat fresh cutbait, a lively bluegill/sunfish/bullhead/carp will call them in from a distance better than the cutbait will. The biggest flatheads tend to always be around the nastiest stuff too. So if there's anything like a big rock pile, log jam, undercut bank, those would be good areas to place a bait near.
