I recently purchased a brand new core 50 and was extremely happy to get it. It came spoiled up with 50lb Daiwa j braid. As soon as I got it i put on a st.croix legend tournament bass 7'1" medium power fast action. The next day I took it out and put on a light shakey head 1/4 oz and overall wasn't amazingly impressed by the casting distance... I played with the breaks. Everybody always says they LOVE there core 50s and there the best reels ever. Don't get me wrong, there so light as well as smooth, but anyways does anyone know why I might not be getting the casting distance I'm looking for? Is it the line? Thanks

I've owned several Shimano 50 series and  always did well with 2 or 3 brake tabs on and no spool tension unless it was windy.  How full is your spool?  More than an eighth inch from the edge will really slow  things down.

 It wouldn't leave you a whole lot of 50lb braid to cast. The 50 spool is small to start with.

It's pretty much completely full, after all I did not put the line on it

Looked up J Braid 50.  At .36mm  50 is 12 lb. equiv.  I think most guys who use braid on these reels go with 20-40.  I'm an old timer who still prefers mono.

The problem if you want to call it that is with the Rod not the reel. I think 1/4 is at the low end of that rods range. Flushing and piling the spool bearings will help any reel out of the box.

The rods lure specs are 1/4 to 3/4 I believe... so I assume the rod isn't leading up enough?

Yea, I plan of getting some 10 or 15lb power pro but I got the reel a few days ago so haven't had time to pick it up.

10-15 braid is going to dig in. Stick with at least 20.

You can't expect to get a lot of distance with rope thick braided line.

Alright I appreciate it!

I have 20lb braid on my shimano core, with a rod that is meant to load with 1/4 of an oz and I can chuck a rooster tail inline what feels like a mile. I'd fownsize the braid, and get into a medium or medium light rod.

Trade it for a Daiwa

That is a fine reel. Treat yourself to a spool of #12 Tatsu...Problem solved!

 

As has been said, that braid is too much for that reel. Get some 10-12 yo zuri hybrid, perfect for that reel.
