There's a dealer with a 2008 boat listed. It has a 2008 50 HP Mercury 2 stroke outboard. I have lived my whole life with 2 stroke motors and so I actually see this as a plus for a boat that will only get used 10-15 times a year. Less complex, easier maintainance.

 

Am I wrong?

If the price is right...jump on it

Lots of us prefer 2 strokes.  When I repowered my Lowe ( we moved and I no longer had a hp restricted lake to fish on) I jumped from the 25 hp Merc to a 75 hp Merc. I chose a 2 stroke on purpose.  Realize you will not get the kind of gas economy that the four stroke will get you, but a 50 won't be bad. If the boat is all good jump on it. Take care of it and it will last a long time.

I love my 2008 Triton Aluminum with a 50HP Mercury. Thing runs so smooth. Just keep a can of Seafoam in it to help clean it out and if you let it set for more than a week or two add Marine Stabil. I also run 93 Oct gas just because it seems it responds better. Gets a hotter spark from the plugs. Just seems to idle better and run smoother as opposed to 87 grade. 

I went and looked at it. It was beautiful. Was going to go buy it this weekend...it was gone.

That really sucks..

Ouch, I feel your pain. I had one picked out during my boat search, but it sold the day before I was going to go look at it. Ended up finding the exact boat I wanted for 8k less than the boat I was going to buy, so maybe it will work out for you in the end. 

There's nothing wrong with 2-strokes, especially modern ones.

 

While I'm not a fan of the older, carbureted, cold blooded, smoke belching versions...a lot of people (including me) used them for a lot of years and they got the job done very well....and they've done nothing but get better.

 

There's nothing wrong with 4 strokes either.

 

Both work great.

2 strokes are great motors.  Follow directions as above.  I have a 1991 Mercury 40HP, 2 stroke, f cylinder, oil inject.  Still running strong.
