Currently, the only way for me to come into contact with my finned friends is snagging carp (Legal in WV) near a discharge outlet on a flooded river that we can walk to from our dorms. Is it spring yet?

Ahhh....snaggin' carp. As kids we use to snag suckers in the spring when they swam up small tributaries. Never snagged a carp though. Must have put up a good fight? Congrats.

Those are some giant carp . I wonder what the slang for giant carp is , you know like toad or hawg for largemouths

Definitely, MH with 12lb line and you can't move them when they are in the main current of the river

The buffalo pile into the warm water discharge at one of the power plant lakes I fish, to the point it's difficult to fish a jigging spoon for wipers most days. They are fun to fight though, but not much fun to deal with once worn out. I've got them up to 35 pounds. They're good fighters though, occasionally I'll even get one that tailwalks like a marlin. This is a pretty average one, and you can see the missing scales on the side from where it was hooked. They pull like a truck when they're stuck in the side and get into the current.

How do you go about snagging them? Just cast out and reel back in really fast?

Imagine stroking a jig but with a 1/0 treble with a stout 1/8oz swimbait head below it. 75% of the fish pull off within the first 30 seconds but a few stay hooked. I also crank a 1/2oz lipless through the area sometimes. Either way it's all pretty dumb haha

Its against the law to purposefully snag any fish below a dam on a small river that I fish often but everyone does it  "accidentally'  . All one has to do is hop a jig off the bottom and Asian carp will be snagged . Its quite fun reeling in 50 lb plus fish with 12 lb test on a light hook crappie jig . Most of the time you are just holding on .

It has never made sense to me why some states don't allow the snagging of invasive species, it is almost impossibly rare to snag gamefish while trying to snag carp.

I TRY to snag carp all the time and it ain't easy like people think. I would bet that the "no snagging" regs are to protect paddlefish. There are very short snagging seasons for paddlefish on Tennessee river but most other states don't allow it (Alabama for one)

You're right .Game wardens watch this place closely . I watched a guy snag an asian Carp accidentally . He put it on  a stringer and  the agent made him throw the invasive species back .

I've only tried snagging once, and that was some giant grass carp when I was a kid.  I only managed to pull a scale off.  But, catching carp on light line, is a ball!!!  Those big ole boys pull like Mack trucks!  I'll give the Europeans a nod on these guys -- they got it right when they took them as a seriously fun fish to catch!  Just doesn't sound very "manly" to be fishing with "boilies", lol.
