New to bass fishing from the Chicagoland Area

Featured Replies

Hello! I am 35 yro from the NW Suburbs of Chicago and I am new to bass fishing. Growing up I have some fond memories fishing with my late grandmother in the lake behind my Uncle's house but that was the most fishing I ever did until recently.  The first weekend of June, my neighborhood, where my fiancé and I recently purchased our first home, held their annual Fishing Derby and we decided to go to get to know our neighbors. We didn't catch any fish but we both had fun.. me more than her.  Every year, Cabelas, who is one of the main sponsors of the derby, stocks the pond with over 100 fish, so the next day we decided to go fishing again but before that, I decided to watch some YouTube videos, to get some tips on how to catch fish. While we were out, I tried some of the new techniques I learned (Texas rig, wacky rig, etc). This time, I ended up catching my first large mouth bass... that is when I got "hooked" (pun intended).  Since then, I have been going back to the pond several times a week for a couple hours to practice all the techniques I learn on YouTube (Glenn being my favorite).

In the past couple weeks I purchased a Pflueger President/Cabelas TourneyTrail 6'6" rod combo at Cabelas, stocked up on hooks, plastic worms, poppers, frogs crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and have been using that for a couple weeks. Today I bought my first baitcaster; a Daiwa Tatula SV TW with a 6'6" G.Loomis E6X 783C MH/F.  As of now, these two rods will be my arsenal as I learn and get better at catching fish. Majority of my fishing will be bank fishing as I do not own or have access to a boat.  I have the pond in my neighborhood that I know has fish since it's stocked every year for the derby, several forest preserve lakes within a short drive from my home and I am about an hour away from Lake Michigan. This forum has helped me a lot and I hope to learn more from all of the knowledgeable members here!
