Need Help!!! Buying a boat from VA to register in NC..Please help

Featured Replies

Tried to delete this thread but I can't....UPDATE: I just heard from the seller and he DOES have a title for the trailer....I was freaking out!!!

Ok guys....so here's my situation...

I'm buying a boat and trailer from a guy in VA....I was talking to someone here in NC and he said its a nightmare bringing a trailer to NC b/c VA does not title trailers.

The gentlemen I'm buying it from said he had both titles for boat and trailer....I left him a message this morning asking him to confirm he did indeed have both titles. I'll be the 3rd owner as the guy in VA bought it from the original owner in SC....

If he doesn't have a title for the trailer what do I do to register the trailer here in NC??

I probably won't here from the seller till this evening as he doesn't check his phone till he gets off work.

TIA

I bought my Skeeter from guy in Tennessee and I live in North Carolina.  I had to get motorized bill of sale.  Two different ones along with a release from his credit union and the boat had been paid off for a year.  Then got a letter saying my trailer might take up to 4 months while they do a lien search.  It was a nightmare and in still waiting on trailer title from NC.  It's doable but next time I will buy in NC.  They also wanted his old registration for the boat which he didn't have.

It took me the better part of four months to sort out the registration for my boat and trailer that I bought from Louisiana with the DMV here in CA.  Apparently the dealership didn't send the correct forms, and then I ended up doing something wrong at DMV as well when they had to physically inspect the boat and trailer.  I was praying that I would not get pulled over for towing a boat with no tags and no boat ID numbers on my way to DMV, which would have added another layer of fun.  A couple months in I received a letter from DMV and I thought, "Well, that wasn't too bad".  Wrong.  It was a request for correction of some documents.  A couple days later I received another letter from DMV with a CA sales tax bill.  Thanks DMV!

We do title trailers here in VA unless it is farm use, don't think a boat trailer would be farm u:)se

Sounds absurd...what do you do if you move to NC from a state that doesn't tile trailers?  Or boats?

WI doesn't title trailers, and I bought the rig used from a guy in Illinois...the boat and trailer are 2005s, any paper trail is long since lost...

...I'm not sure I understand why any state needs to know I have a boat and trailer...but whatever...

They will tell you it is for for theft protection. It is really for revenue.....never pass a chance to get your money. Here they will tell you cameras at intersections(so they can mail you a ticket) prevent accidents. Pure BS, it's all about the money. The local Sheriff can't keep a straight face when asked about it.

I know it's hard to believe. And there are folks that want the government more involved.
