I have a few bags of old creature baits that are leaking. I guess they were salted. I put them in a zip loc bag to contain them till I figure out what to do with them. Can I melt them down again and repour them into senkos? Of course I need all the stuff to set up to do this. But I'm thinking of buying flakes to add if this can be done.

what do you guys do with old plastics?

I started melting my old soft plastics about a year ago. It is a great way to reuse old baits, and now I have a reason to clean up all the trashed plastics I find all around the pond. I'm not sure if this is the best site, but I like to find silicon open pour molds at Lurecraft.com. Aside from that, just buy a couple of glass measuring cups. Put it in the microwave for two minutes or so, stir it, then pour it in. Good luck!

Make sure it's a microwave you don't use for food and you don't melt them in the house or you'll be single before your plastic hardens. Lol

I bought some open pour molds from lurecraft as well. They work well but just remember they'll be flat on one side instead of round if you're pouring Senkos. I also made some of my own open pour molds from Plaster of Paris. I spray the plaster molds with Pam to help the plastic lift out.

Most of my plastics are new. Time to recycle. Guess. I figure to mix in flakes. How many molds do I need to pour a batch. How long before I can remove them from the molds?

I don't add any flakes, just try to melt similar colors. Most everything I make turns out some shade of black and blue, or green pumpkin, unless I melt a bunch of the same baits in the same color.

 

I usually wait about 5-10 minutes for them to fully cool and set, but it depends on what bait it is you're pouring. 

Keep a bowl of cold water nearby and toss them in once they have started to set.

@Bluebasser86 How well do the plaster of paris molds hold up? Are you able to mold quite a few sets of baits? Although I imagine as long as you keep the master you can just keep making molds if needed.

I  use to do it and everything came out that color .

I've made quite a few out of them so far and no signs of wearing out yet. They're pretty easy to make though.

I made all of these from a 32 oz (i think) gatorade bottle full of various old torn plastics with a small amount of new plastisol. I didn't sort the colors out, just various colors. I poured them out of the gatorade bottle, ripped them up small and tossed them in a measuring cup, put a little plastisole in there, mixed them up a little and tossed them in the microwave for 45 seconds at a time until they were all liquid. Then I used various direct injection molds. When mixing colors you are usually going to get either a black, dark green, green pumpkin or brown color. These worked great and they had a scent to them from some of the plastics I had melted. I shipped most of these off to Texas for some old Navy buddies and their kids.
