Berkley Lightning Rod Combo

Featured Replies

A few months ago I got a Berkley Lightning Rod Combo at Cabela's on sale. The only reason I got it was because I heard the rod was good and the combo with reel was worth less than the rod by itself. I got the spinning combo and I was just wondering if the reel is good or not and if I should just buy another spinning reel to use.

Use it until it dies on you and then just buy something else. Got a L Daiwa combo from Dick’s. They were buy one get one. I could tell the reel is a piece of junk, but it’s held up so far. I’ll use it until it fails.

What do you mean by die? Also how long does that generally take?

What are you really after here?  If the reel works use it.  If you don't like it get something else.  If it dies that means it quit working.  I can't tell from the listing what reel that is.  It's probably pretty cheap but could last you a couple seasons depending on what use it sees.

What I wanted to know was if anyone else had used the combo reel before and if so was it worth using. That way I would buy another reel on sale for the holiday if it wasnt.

For the money that is a great rod.  Just try the reel, and if you don't like it, buy a Pflueger President of Shimano Sedona reel on sale for the holidays.  Either reel will suit you well and match up well with that rod.

No I don't have any experience with the reel that comes on that combo.  It should be perfectly usable but it might only last a season or two.  I would definitely at least use it before I replaced it.

Most "basic" spinning reels are more than adequate for fresh water fishing. I'd use it and see how it goes.

*shocked* didn’t know Berkley made reels!

as others have said upgrade to a Pflueger President or a Kastking Sharky 2 and enjoy fishing. Those are workhorse reels that should stand up to whatever you throw at them
