Hey there, need some advice on size and color of some squarebills. I have a coupon for Basspro and am going to be buying some KVD squarebills that are on sale. I have no idea what size or color to get. I'm fishing from the bank and will be fishing lakes and small ponds. Also do I get silent types as well as rattles or stay with one or the other?

Thanks

I like the 1.5 in both sexy Shad and Bluegill. 2.5 in both chili Craw and chartreuse with Black Back. I fish heavy pressured ponds, so I opt for silent where available.

The KVD Squarebills are decent cranks for when you’re starting out, but the stock hooks are dull.

Nowadays, for slightly higher price, I go for Lucky Craft  or Berkley Squarebills in the same colors mentioned above.

A lot of the lucky craft square bills have been on sale and are cheaper than the kvd.  My personal favorite is the copper shad in 1.5

most typical size is the 1.5.  The silent ones you can get anywhere, while the rattling version is a BPS exclusive (although I'm not sure the difference matters much).  Most colors work most of the time, in most places, but I like any sunfish/bluegill or craw patterns for my waters, as I have no shad where I fish (does it matter? I don't know, but I have my superstitions like everyone else). If you fish muddy or low visibility water, the firetiger or the chartreuse with black back are good choices.

I use the 1.5 size a majority of the time. There's a BPS exclusive color called "river minnow" that has been one of my most productive crankbaits the last couple years. Green gizzard shad is also high on the list along with the always popular chartreuse black back.

If fishing from shore, you may want to consider looking into the KVD 1.5 shallow crank. Doesn't dive as deep and is great for small grassy ponds. All the sizes have their place on the water, but they all are going to dive 4-6ft roughly. The 1.5 shallow runner will stay closer to the 1-3ft range which wont get you snagged from shore as often.

River minnow is my favorite as well.

The KVD 1.5 will serve you very well. No need to go crazy with the colors. Bluegill, crawfish, and shad themed colors are all you need for most water conditions. Throw in a bright color like chart./black back, or chart./blue back for really stained water and you'll be set.

While not 100% needed, I do suggest changing the stock hooks. The KVD Mustad 1x strong, 2x short elite triple grips in size #4 are a great match for the 1.5, but a tad expensive. A more budget option that also works very well are the VMC short shank, 1x strong round bends in size #4. I use both, and have no issues with either.

1.5 silent in Gizzard Shad, Sexy Shad, Chart Sexy Shad and MM Sexy Rock Star are the cranks I use when fishing pressured public ponds.

1.5 and 2.5 in sexy shad and black back chartreuse are all we use anymore.  Hard to beat strike kings for the money!

I personally like Strike King KVD 1.5 and 2.5, Storm Arashi Silent 3ft and 5ft versions, Cotten Cordell Big O (1980s model), and Bagley B2.

Colors: Grey/White Shad, Bluegill and Craw Patterns.
