Hello to all n tight lines!!

started largemouth bass fishing in 2017.Mainly yak fishing in ponds n lakes...would like to fish rivers with creeks and/or coves..Any suggestions for a fellow fisherman?..I do have the Naugatuck river close by me..

I use  pretty much the same lures as in lakes . Buzzbzits , spinnerbaits , various plastics , jigs and crankbaits . Largemouths like to hang around  cover in slack water ,  smallies like a little more   current . Cast upstream as much as possible but you can get bit casting downstream too .

Good lures for river Largemouth bass are spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits,bucktail jigs, etc.

Be sure to have some type of anchor system.

Whether that is an actual anchor, PowerPole or a home made mud pole. You will want something that can lock you in one spot, that will allow you to fish a good looking spot. Fighting current in a yak sucks.

 

While there are occasional largemouths in quieter river water around here, it’s mostly smallmouths or spotted bass in current areas.  For them, plastics on a small jig head or a light T-rig bumped down the current will catch more fish than any other lure, and with fewer snags.  We use spinning rods and 6-8 lb mono or 10-12 lb braid.  If yours is a deeper, slower river, you can use standard largemouth lures to catch the largemouths that dominate there.

Smallmouth are the dominant bass species in the rivers around me. I do on occasion catch a largemouth from the rivers but it's usually when I am fishing slower with plastics. Stick baits and jigs mostly.

Honestly, fish slack water. If the Naugatuck is a slower stream, you can fish it much like a lake with the exception of noting that fish will hold on the up and downstream side of obstructions. One of my favorite river baits is the Hi-Def Craw from Tackle HD along with a Keitech Swing Impact or Easy Shiner 4".

I have never seen any LM bass in the "Naugaflush". There are, however, some smallmouth. I haven't targeted them there, but there are is a small population in the lower section of the river. You would probably have a much better time floating the Housatonic. The Bull's Bridge section has fantastic smallmouth fishing, and some very large brown trout as well. For many years I've fished from Bull's Bridge all the way up to Falls Village. There is plenty of beautiful water. I haven't tried floating it in a kayak, but I'm sure you could do it in the right boat. Any small plastics on jigheads work very well. Also, in-line spinners, and even poppers once the water gets into the mid 70's. FYI...you're going to donate a ton of tackle to that river, but it's worth it.

 

Most of the smallies on the Housy are rather small; 6"-12", but they've got a ton of might! Over time you will learn where, when, and how to catch the larger fish, which there are plenty of. I've taken smallies to 4lbs on the Hous. When you hook one of those, you'd better be ready to chase after it.

 

There used to be a tackle shop in New Fairfield (I think) near Candlewood. I can't remember what it was called. If they are still around, John, the owner would be able to give you some really good info.
