Do any of you guys use a punch skirt with your worm or creature bait? I was thinking about doing it to beef up the bait and maybe help it thru the grass?Am I thinking in the right direction or not?Btw not talking about for punching or flipping, thanks guys!

Last time I was out I was throwing worms and creature baits (not punching or flipping) but the appendages from the baits we're getting hung up and i felt I couldn't work the bait properly,so buddy of mine suggested a punch skirt,guess I'll try it

Of course......is it a jig or a skirted Texas rig....i don’t know, but it works.

It stared for me back in the 70s when I use to make lures, one night I decided to stuff a bullet weight into a rubber skirt. It was so difficult I gave up after only making a half a dozen. This little trick when paired with a craw worm won me many a tournament.

 

Scott's Marina on the Texas side of Toledo Bend is a one room building, a small wharf big enough for a couple jon boats, and a launch. Scott sold Community Coffee which is the #1 coffee of Cajuns and why I hung around. He had maybe a dozen packs of worms, 4-5 spinner baits & traps. On one particular morning I notice some new lures lying on the counter, I picked one up & the little card read "Big Red's Flying Jig". Inside was the lead head of a spinner bait, a skirt, & a 3/0 offset hook with screw lock attached. I bought em all!

This was the perfect answer to putting a skirt on a bullet weight!

 

Later I found Barlow's Tackle sold just the weights and then Cyclone Lures made a Slip-n-Jig.

 

For some anglers its how they can get a bullet weight through cover easier than a jig, a problem I don't have with jigs.

For me it's changing the profile of a t-rig, the added action of a skirt, & eliminates buying a skirt bead.

 

Like with a jig I use skirts with round strands, flat strands, fine cut strands, or wide cut strands.

 

I can't really explain its fish attracting abilities but what I do know is I've fished behind guys throwing t-rig & jigs and caught fish they missed.

 

Is it the bait? I don't know but it works which is all I care about!

Originally it was to help the lures through the weeds, but now it is for bulk after switching my creature baits to Gamblers. The Gambler craws and creatures were designed for flipping and punching with slim profiles for sliding through heavy cover without losing the appendages. Over time, they will still rip and tear, but I have more problem with the claws and appendages being nipped offed by fish. The skirts did help when I was using Yamamoto, Netbait, Berkley, Keitech, Zoom, and a few others.

The Gambler Quick Change skirts are nice if you want a thin skirt that can be changed out without having to retie. Even the regular Gambler punch skirts seem a little thin. They are also a more fragile skirt material, so I find they tear up quicker than a good 55 strand punching skirt. Give the Gambler skirts a try and see what you think. 

 

The punch skirt I use is from Mike at Siebert Outdoors. You could call it a shameless plug, but I’m now just getting close to wearing out the original set I ordered from him 6-8 months ago. 

I like to use them when I want a bulky bait, but need something even more resistant to snags than a jig, for when I'm deep in the jungle.

I tie my own, they work really nice with something like a beaver or a pit boss. 

I make them by using a piece of wire in a spinnerbait mold . 1/8 , 1/4 , 3/8 and 1/2 .

That's how the "Big Red's Flying Jig" was made except he used a thin plastic insert.

 

 

Lately I been using a different color skirt from the bait and getting great results ie junebug skirt/green pumpkin creature bait
