How often do you use inline spinners? Which ones are your favorites?

Mepps fan here. I bring a few Aglias and Black Furys along whenever I'm river fishing for smallmouth, although I don't tie them on as much as I should.

I use Mepps Aglia #4, plain (no squirrel tails). The plain Mepps work just as well as the dressed versions and cost less. Because I like to use them especially in shallow, rocky streams, I tend to get them hung up and lose them so saving a buck or two on each one adds up.

Blue fox vibrex. You can cut of the treble add a split ring then add a single hook if needed. The firetiger color with brass blade on the inside is killer for all species.

Thank you for your replies. I will give those lures a try. I have been using 1/4 oz. Joe Flies with the fire glo blade. So far they have been successful. Thanks again for your responses. Please take care and have a wonderful evening.

It took me awhile to realize this, but I think you're exactly right -- a smallmouth (in current, at least) doesn't care about that tail, it cares about the flash.

Inline spinners are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get.

This is my favorite but haven’t been able to find them since the 80’s

I do this to all my inlines now and add a quality  hook and some kinda plastic it dont hurt the fish catching and less likly to get a thumb piercing 

Another Mepps fan here. Arguably the greatest white bass angler in Texas is Dennis Christian. He actually has an article published on the Mepps website about his technique using a plain, usually silver, Aglia in a couple of different sizes (depending on the size of shad at the time). There is a link to a YouTube video showing very clear and specific instructions on how to use his technique. Must viewing for anyone who likes to fish white bass on major lakes or during the spawn up in rivers and creeks.

 

I used the Mepps Plain Aglias during the white bass spawn on my home lake. It works a bit differently when they are up in the shallows but just as effective. I caught a couple over the lake record, in the 19" length range, several over the lake record of 3 lbs. 

 

More important to the black bass "specialists" among us, while I was catching the sandies, I also caught quite a few LMBs, so these little inline spinners will catch all species.

 

One photo'd below is measured up against my 14" boot. And, a small LMB caught on the same Aglia, same day. I think over that 3-day weekend, I had just under 50 sandies and 4 LMBs, a couple of crappie over about a total of 6 hours of fishing.

I like the Mepps Black Fury and the Comet Mino.  Good multispecies trolling baits in local gravel pits here.

 

I also make my own inline spinners - I take the treble off a bass or pike sized Mepps, and replace it with a weighted swimbait hook.  I usually use a Grass Pig Jr or regular Grass Pig.

I use them most trips to my bud's pond because he has good size bluegill and it seems to cull the small ones. To that end, I use a 1/4 oz. Rooster Tail. I had one that was rainbow trout/gold blade that just slayed the bream and bass, but i cast it once and the 6 lb. test broke and it just kept flying. I replaced it with a white/silver and it doesn't seem to work as well. I've started adding a quality swivel to help with line twist.

Another fan of mepps #4 gold plain in line spinner. Usually fish stained to muddy water, farm ponds. My confidence lure by far. 

Mepp's Aglia and Black Fury in size 1 and 2 for stream smallies. Size 3 and 4 for Largemouth and Pike.

Size one in streams is the perfect size to match the minnows and catches lots of fish and big ones too.

I use a 1/4 oz panther martin silver spinner. It basically catches anything that swims in the rivers here

I wish I had read this thread before I started mine. I started throwing inline spinners yesterday for the first time in literally years... I threw some south bend spinners that I've been hanging onto for literally years inexplicably, looking for smallies in the river. Now that I've been reading peoples experiences with them, I'm going to go buy a bunch more today.

Sigh, I broke down today. The bait monkey won! I grabbed a 5 pack of blue fox flash size 1 spinners and a couple 1/8 rooster tails to try out. The Mepps were significantly more expensive... if these work out maybe I'll upgrade. 

 

I'm especially intrigued at the idea of adding a swimbait and swimbait hook on the back of a big spinner. Crafty crafty....

I pretty much just use Rooster Tails in 1/16, 1/8 and sometimes 1/4 oz. I always use a gold blade model, favorite being a black body with gold metal flake. I can only get them at Walmart around here. A good friend turned me on to the Joe's Flies. They are starting to be my go to.

Mepps Aglia, replace the treble with a weighted swimbait hook rigged with a 3.8 Keitech.  That would be money.

You guys ever get line twist using flurocarbon

Love them, I use them everytime I go out. I make my own and like them much better then store bought because I can make them to the specs and colors I like.
