Had this discussion with my son on the boat right after I caught her. Yesterday the walleye, and last week a big pike flipping docks. 2 fish species known for colder water, and of above average size, hanging out in the shallows. Yet I struggle to find keeper bass here during the dog days of summer.

Ive caught 3 walleyes that were 28-29 inches long while bass fishing. None were in water more than 3-4 feet deep. All three came between 11am and 4pm. Two came off a dock and one was on a rock pile so shallow it had a buoy to keep boats from hitting it. I also had a 25 incher that I caught on a topwater bait. Just like bass, walleyes don’t read the books telling them how they are supposed to act.

Caught 3 one spring; 24, 26, and 27 inches on a white spinnerbait. Couldn't keep any because no fish over 20 inches during what I guess is the spawn.

I've caught a couple 24's and hundreds in the 14-22" range. The slot creel on the lake I caught this one on is 3 between 14-16" and 1 over 24" SE Wisconsin has a 18" minimum. I threw a number of meals back this spring because they were under 18".

I like this rule on our river in the spring time and wish it was in effect year round. Selective harvest by letting the bigger spawning stock go and eating the littler ones.

@slonezp Great walleye!!!!

Sometimes it's all about the thermocline too...

I've caught walleye in 1' of water in the middle of August while burning squarebills over the rocks. They hangout in places just like the bass more than we think.

You know once you pay for that walleye mount you are going to catch a bigger one. ?

Next one on the wall will be a perch. 13" is my PB as of now but bigger ones roam local waters

Big walleye = top predator. She's gonna do what she wants!
