Strike King Hack Attack Pad Perch OR Popping Perch?

Featured Replies

Been checking out these two top water baits, look like they would be fun to play around with. While they have a few small differences between them they look pretty similar. Just wanted to see if anyone has tried either, have a preference or have a color pattern they recommend?

I haven’t tried them and I don’t think I will they seem a bit gimmicky.

I would try the Poppin perch, but I'm with burrows, they do seem a bit gimmicky.

Ill stick with my frogs

Haven't tried them but I was so unimpressed with the KVD Sexy Frog that I doubt I end up trying either of them.

x3 on the gimmicky thing, I'm sure they would work, but I don't see the sense in dressing up a frog as something else, and like someone mentioned above, the KVD frog isn't all that to begin with.

I like the kvd frog it’s not the best frog but it’s a good frog very durable and the skirt isn’t all cheapy like The booyah pad crasher. Only problem is it doesn’t collapse as well as the pad crasher. But it’s very durable.

You know you can change or replace the "legs" right? You can even get creative and put something other than skirt material in there. A trick worm is a royal pain to get in there, but worth the trouble...

So then why put up with the inferior KVD body?

I have Poppin' Perch -only bc I found it hanging from a tree -with 6lb test hanging off it.

It appears to me to have been patterned after the Japanese Koinobori, those carp-shaped wind socks (???:headscratch:???). In the BPS catalog, a designer of the Poppin' Perch is named. Maybe he'll pipe in here and explain the thinking. I'm... :headscratch:. "...Fun to play around with", as the OP described it, may be it. Nothing wrong with that. I've been known to catch steelhead under a Snoopy bobber, and bass on a soft plastic human, made in an old Creepy Crawler mold. I caught a lot of bass on that thing, each to the Jaws theme riff, "Bah, Bump.... Bah, Bump....!

Will the Poppin' Perch catch bass? Of course. Decades ago I learned that one can get bass to bust through a mat with almost anything that causes a disturbance. (I'm not sold that it's "frogs" the bass are expecting; Here, it is more bluegills picking off insects in the mats). Regardless, the commercial baits haven't come a long way in terms of efficiency: They hook better, some can walk, and the popper-style ones add commotion that can make a difference over a dense mat.

My rambles on the Poppin' Perch. I haven't fished it. It's in my "overflow box".

It's so big it scares most of the fish away -- although you can still land big ones on it.

I’m partial to the KVD frog.

If you are looking to "play", by all means get some.

If you are looking for the best popping frog....keep looking.

We all buy stuff to try, myself included.

My personal rankings of  frogs are:

#1 Spro

#2 Booyah

#3 Jackall

#4 Teckel

#139 Strike King

#140 Snag Proof

#141 Scum frogs

#142 Manns

I don't know if there are actually 142 brands of hollow bodied frogs on the market, but if there is, those mentioned in slots #139-#142 would be placed just about right.

**Disclaimer** Booyah is not immune from dud's, the Toad Runner is a huge turd, but I look the other way on that,as the rest of their frogs are pretty good.

I use the popping perch and ive caught some decent bass on them. my only complaint is that the skirt tail  strands can tear off  easily and its noticeable if one side has a few less than the other.

they are not a gimmick in my eyes but in the end it is a  hollow body popping frog  with a different skirt design.
