SLX reel question

Featured Replies

Sorry that I'm about to lead off with my regurgitated hatred for the Fury rods I bought, but the 2 of 5 I decided to keep I sold to my friend today for the price of 1. He snapped a rod with me the other day and I handed him a Fury spinning setup and he liked it (how?! lol just kidding, I know I'm the minority) so selling those to him for a deal kind of just... happened. I'm out some money I guess but I already considered it lost money to begin with.

Anyways now I've got $100~ to spend towards fishing and a MH HMG rod currently sitting without a reel, so the obvious thing to do is get a reel for it. The Fury had a Fuego on it but my wife adopted it. I've decided on the SLX 7.2:1 at 29" IPT. I'll just use that setup for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, and Texas rigs. My question is, for anyone with experience with the reel, is this SLX going to be alright for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits? Will it struggle, will it feel good? I don't typically like a 7 for my reels but it is a lower IPT 7 so that would be ok to me and the 6.3:1 is 25" IPT which is just a tad slow for my liking. I guess I just want to know about the "guts" of this reel.

I don’t personally have one but a freind of mine does and I believe it’s the 7 ratio also. He fishes allot of chatterbaits and he really likes the reel. For whatever that’s worth. I’m sure the 6 would be fine also.

It should do just fine, I’ve been using my Slx for almost a year for spinner baits, chatterbaits, frogs, and texas rigs with no problem. And mine is an 8.2:1.

I have the 7.2:1, I use it on a SLX 6'10" MxF rod - jerkbaits.  Very good reel.  Academy has 25% off today on it.

Jerkbaits are a different story. I'm interested in the guts the 7.2:1 has for hard pulling blade baits.

I have that exact reel and I do have trouble throwing spinnerbaits on it, but I fill my spools up a lot so that makes a difference. It was a workout trying to burn a willow leaf when I used it for that. Do you fill up your spools pretty high?

Yeah, sorry I should have been more clear.  I use it for jerkbaits, but have used it for spinnerbaits and small cranks.  Again, no issues, it works very well.  I use 10 lb Berkley Pro flouro on it.

I was chucking a 1oz. plopper around last week on my 8 speed without it feeling over burdened.

"It's Fujigawa with Sony guts, $450, This is what you want"...

I decided to give Lews the opportunity to change my mind about them. I'm getting the new(er) $100 speed spool in 6.8:1 @ 28 IPT.

The "guts" are a brass drive gear and a brass pinion gear.  The rest of the inside looks just like any Shimano.
