hi i was wondering which fish scale is accurcate? i brought like 2 fish scale and they seems to be off by a lot. any 1 know any that wont break my wallet?

Why do you think they're off?

You can test your scales by lifting a gallon jug of water. It should weigh around 8.34 lbs.

Luggage scale. Several people on here use them. Very accurate. Costs around $6.

The only way to check a scale for accuracy is to weigh something that has been weighed on a certified scale like a package of meat you bought at the grocery store. Weighing stuff like a 5 lb bag of sugar, a gallon of water, or a dumb bell isn’t the best way. None of those are guaranteed to weigh exactly what they say. They might be close, but not exactly.

This is my scale calibration device. I use it around once a week to make sure my scales are still accurate.

I bought it at Walmart for $4.00.

Before purchasing, I asked the deli department to weigh it.

even though it is a 5 lb. weight it was actually 5 lb. 2. oz on their scale.

Is one digital and one analog?  Are you properly translating from tenths of a pound (digital) to ounces?  If your digital scale reads 5.5 pounds you need to correct it (.5 x 16) to determine the fish is 5lb 8oz.  You won't know if your scale is accurate until you follow @Scott F 's advice.

Deli scales don’t weigh in ounces. They weigh in pounds and hundredths of a pound. Are you sure the weight of your 5 pound weight wasn’t 5.2 pounds? Which would be 5 pounds 3.2 ounces?

their scale said 5.1 lbs. which converts to 5lb. 1.6 oz. 

I converted it, because my scale reads ounces not 100ths of a pound.

 

my  digital flat scale read 5.125 pounds. which converts to 5lb 2oz

I am not too concerned about 1/2 ounce difference.

clarification

ima test it with a dumb bell later. i weighted my fish that is a 5lb and gived to te restraunt to prepare and they weighted 6.5 on their scale. both my scale say 5 lb so i'll test it later and let u guys know. i got a 2lb dumb bell at home to test.

alright so i tested with a 8lb dumb bell and 1 show 8lb and the digital one show 8.16 almost accrutate. i guess the restraunt scale is wrong.

I've been through many scales and this Rapala touch screen is the best scale I've ever used. I check it couple times a year with a known weight and it weighs right on money.

Man I would have given about anything to see the lady's behind the deli counter when you handed her a pink 5 pound weight and asked her to weigh it for you!

Battery powered digital scales are only as accurate the battery voltage. Check the battery Voltage.  A good digital scale should weigh within .1 %, very small variance. .1% of 5 lbs is .005 lbs or .08 oz

Surprisingly she did not seem to surprised when I asked her to weigh it.

It was at the Kansas City Kansas legends walmart. I am sure they have seen stranger things than that. The people of walmart site could stay busy a long time just taking pictures there.

 

I didn't purposely pick pink. that just happens to be their color for 5lb weights.

 

I purchased a Samson similar to that used on MLF and it's a love hate relationship.  Supposedly it is accurate beyond compare but, it's a pita to use by yourself when you're holding a fish and trying to zero it out.  

 

They say it has a .4% variance, I couldn't imagine finding a hand held scale with a .1%.  Any suggestions, @WRB ?

That makes sense, the restaurant probably sells stuff by the pound and is overcharging people.

The digital scale should have a Tare button with hold so you don't need to keep zeroing the scale every use. I use an older Ultra Sport 30 but there are less expensive models available today.

@WRB you're saying that all I have to do is zero it out once, hit tare and I shouldn't have to worry about it?  That, is a game changer...if that's the way it works.

 

Do I have to keep the scale on or can I turn it off?  Sorry if I sound like a daily but the scale came with 0 instruction.

My old scale does, if hold the on/off button down it clears the Tare setting. I don’t know Samson scale works?

I'm hoping I can just hang my grips on the unit, tare it, catch a fish, lip grip it and hang it on the unit.  If I'm thinking correctly, that would subtract the weight of the fish grip from the net weight.  

 

That would be awesome!  I bought that scale 2-3 yrs ago and I've used it maybe a dozen times.  I'll have to check it out.  Thanks!!
