What is the wierdest lure/bait combo you've used with success?

Featured Replies

We all get to that point where our sanity is questioned out on the lake. Perhaps due to no luck, peer pressure, or just curiosity. I was curious what are some weird combinations of lures or baits that you used that actually worked! Asking because I am lining up a few "hybrid" type baits that I'm going to test these next few days on different lakes.

Did you use any homemade scents? i.e. Garlic powder or coffee Grounds (Dark roast or Light roast ;) )

I was on a pretty good deep bite with a crankbait.

The next week I was marking fish but they were in 25-30 feet of water.

Couldn't buy a bite on a jig, drop shot, texas rig or a carolina rig with a worm

I tied a lazy ike on the end of the carolina rig and caught a bunch of bass that week in that deep water.

Have tried many times since and never gotten another bite.

Haha! He musta needed his nic fix...

A Johnson Silver Minnow with a 10" ribbon tail worm for a trailer. I thought I would catch a monster on that thing. I did catch a few bass on it, but nothing over 2 lbs.

One weekend in April a couple years ago, I caught a few eater walleye at my lake.  I cleaned them, and kept the rib portions for catfish bait to use at a public pond the next day.

I didn't have that strip of walleye ribs in the water for more than 20 seconds before I had a 20" bass slurp it up.  I shrugged it off, thinking that it was a random occurrence.  I proceeded to continue fishing the rib meat hoping for some catfish.  I ended up catching 4 more nice bass that afternoon on the walleye meat.  One can assume I would have not done that well if I had been fishing a jig/craw combo or any other bass bait that day.

Back in the 70s on Toledo Bend I set a record for the largest 15 bass sack with a 3/8 oz spinnerbait with a pink/chartreuse skirt & a #5 chartreuse Colorado blade...2 nd & 3 rd place was Larry Nixon & Tommy Martin...we were all in the same cove.

Late 70s or early 80s there was a Budweiser beer can bait that had something similar to a pop top for a spinner.  Caught a fair number of bass, both small and largemouth on it before I lost it.  Found a picture of it:

I had one of those Bud can lures - a long time ago.  I see the posted picture and mine was kinda different.  The bill was much more vertical - more like a wake bait.  That is how I fished it and it got bit more than once and then I lost it and never found another one at a price to my liking.

Haven't tried this one yet, but it might work pretty good in a nearby lake that was so polluted that it would not freeze in the winter no matter how cold it got...

In 1977 I caught some bass on a lure called The Prez. It was shaped like a peanut with a square bill that had teeth painted on it.  I think it was made by Rebel.  It came out when Jimmy Carter was president.  Meant to be a gag lure, but did actually work. It was given to me as a joke, but at the time I had so few lures I fished anything I had.

Drop shot a pink buzzbait :P

Speaking of pink buzzbaits, last year I caught stripers in Nantucket Sound on a pure pink Nichols buzzbait.

Never heard of anyone fishing buzzbaits in the surf, but I had heard the expression show them something they haven't seen.

So I gave those northern fish a dose of Georgia green bass bait.

Does that count?
