I’ve always gone with the adage that if these baits come with a split ring tie to it, if no ring tie to the eye.

I read Team9Nine’s post on his crank bait experiment and he was using a snap. Do you do this as a split ring replacement or even when no ring is present?

What snaps and size would be best?

I'll say that using a split ring or an appropriately sized snap will see a crank running and acting pretty much the same.  The snap does facilitate a lure change without having to retie.  I use both (not at the same time though)  I do however, prefer oval and pear shaped split rings for the front of most all treble hook baits that have stock standard round split rings.  Line can slip bewteen the rings on the round  versions occasionally which can be problematic besides being a PIA.

I use size 3 snaps for my cranking and jig applications. Just convenience more than anything not having to cut and retie

I’ve used snaps for years with and without split rings. I’ve never seen any difference in a crankbaits action.

I do prefer oval split rings also, but I've had a couple of the pear shaped split rings fail for me.

 

If I use a snap I tie direct to the bait's line tie whether or not there is a split ring on it.  I leave the existing split ring on the bait for another day's use.

I've used snaps since I was a teen on anything with trebles.  As stated above I've never noticed any difference in action.  One buddy ties to split rings and another uses both together and I've never seen it affect catch rate. It's just easier to change baits. 

This is very interesting. I've often considered (longed) to use snaps to facilitate quick bait changes. I don't have a plethora of rigged up poles like some people have. But, I thought it might affect the catch. I'm going to give it a try now.

Which Owner would be best, 26 or 33 pound?

I prefer snaps, but if I run split rings, I do ovals.

I've had to many breaks due to round ones

I recently started using spro split snaps.  I really like them and much of the time just leave the split ring on the lure with it.  

I always use a duo lock snap when fishing cranks.  Sometimes also when using topwaters with trebles, or jerkbaits.  Sometimes I may not want the snap with a jerkbait that I want to keep neutrally buoyant.

I don't think the snap affects the catch rate at all on a quickly moving bait like a crankbait.

Norman Speed Clips are the best IMO.  First thing I do when I take a new crankbait out of package is remove the split ring.  I've been using speed clips on crankbaits forever.  I use the split rings from the bait  for fishing weightless flukes.

I put oval split rings on every crankbait I buy if they don't come with them already. I don't personally like snaps but not because there is anything wrong with using them. Just make sure you don't become complacent with retying while using snaps.
