Eyes

Featured Replies

How do you guys choose which color/style eyes to add to your crankbaits? I like to use some kind of red most times as I think it sends a "wounded" bait message.

I make jigs, and I don't sweat the details. Most bites are reaction bite, and the fish probably doesn't even see the eyes. I have fished jigs with and without eyes and it didn't matter. If you like red and it seems to go with your color scheme go for it. JMO.

Whatever I feel like at that moment or looks most natural.

I don't know... I'm in the process of making my first one and they're all there on a card looking up at me from the table.

Why not look online for the species of fish you're trying to copy for a picture of the fish to see the eye color?

I just use what looks good. There are some pretty cool patterns out there.

Eyes can really make a difference in the overall appearance of a bait. I doubt that fish care one way or the other, but certain colors may add a bit of attraction. If you really want to make a bait look it's best, I recommend checking out Dead Meat Custom eyes. I've been using them for a while now and love the quality and selection they have. Here are a few samples of what they offer. Look them up on Facebook and I'm sure you will be impressed.

Whoops! Sorry about that. I thought they made them down to 2mm.

They're a cosmetic item to help make the lure appeal to fisherman so they'll buy them. I only use them on baits I'm selling - my own stuff I don't usually bother.

If the fish were that attuned to details in the bait they'd certainly see the huge hook hanging off the backside or the gigantic plastic brush guard and look the other way
