Here's my Rod/Reel Lineup...tell me which lure you would use with each setup

Featured Replies

Ok, before everyone starts lecturing me...this is just for fun :)  I have been using most of these for awhile and I know what lures I use with each.  But I have added several lately and while I do have a very good idea what I will use them for (since they were bought for a particular purpose), I thought it would be fun (and educational) to see what you all would do if you had my setup.  I numbered them so if you just want to refer to the number and then list what style/lure you would primarily fish it with, that would be cool.  And bonus points if you want to add any additional info (ie secondary lure, line..). Finally, would love to hear what you think my next rod should be if you see a hole in the setup. Again, this is just for fun...I'm not looking for serious advice;  just looking for what you would do if these were your rods.  Have a great day!

I have a very limited arsenal, 4 setups to be exact so I’m not an expert on all the intricacies but I’ll give it a shot anyways.

#1- Light Texas Rigs, finesse jigs, weightless plastics

#2- jerkbaits (and also same as #1, both are very versatile)

#3- crankbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, open hook top waters (spooks, poppers, prop baits)

#4- Another all arounder? Jigs, Texas Rigs, maybe even lighter frogging(?)

#5- flipping, punching, frogging

#6- same as #5, but smaller swimbaits too (I could be way off)

#7- tubes, shakyheads, finesse swimbaits, heavier drop shot, neko rig

#8- ned rig, dropshot, hair jigs

#9- same as #7

wanted to add that maybe instead of having two identical spinning setups (7 and 9) you should try finding a longer one in a M or ML. I hear a lot about guys using 7’6 rods for hair jigs and ned rigs. Would be a good idea too, just to shake things up. Use a longer spinning rod for those techniques because bites are easier to detect on a longer, softer rod. You’ll see the rod tip deflecting before you feel the bite.

Just for fun I would move one of your dc reels to the 705cb. The dc really shines For crank/moving baits. You won’t regret it even for just one day.

Great idea. I actually just picked up the whipsnake and expride (which is replacing the st croix) so I’ll have to see how things go in the future with the spinning rods.

Yeh I think you are right. Still trying to figure out which reel should go with which rod.  Have been really impressed with the dc version!

Any other thoughts?

Setups look really good. I think others provided great input. I would recommend adding a cranking rod for those shallow crank baits that are on the lower end of the spectrum for the 705CB. Then adding a 7-7'6 H. Other than that, your setups look sweet!! You have some quality equipment.

Regardless of how many rods us fisherman have, we always need more rod lol. My wife tells me no more, but I always manage to sneak just one more lol ?

I have only been bass fishing hard for 3-4 years. Have very little experience with different rod companies but will give it a go.

1. 12 Fluro. Shakeyhead and Jerkbaits

2. 14 Mono. Topwater Cranks

3. 12 Fluro. Shallow to 10ft+ Crankbaits

4. 15 Fluro. Paddletails, Spinnerbait,T Rig

5. 40B or 20F. Pitching, SwimJig in weeds

6. 40B Frog

7. 10 Fluro. Ned Rig

8. 8lb Fluro. Drop Shot

9. 20B to 15F leader. Skipping tubes and flukes

This is based on my limited experience and waters I fish in the midwest. I just created a similar topic so I thought I'd play along.

Advice and opinions are no substitute for personal trial and error.  Just looking at ratings, reviews, etc., I would NEVER have guessed that my favorite chatterbait rod is the one I use now...or that I already had a better jerkbait rod for years..out of two dozen rods, I only found out by mistake.  You need to use experts and interwebs as a guide, but then go and throw different stuff on different rods with different lines.

Yes that's why I said this is just for fun and not looking for serious advice to shape all my decisions.  Just like to get others perspectives.... I am not able to get out very often (have 3 small children) so I like to get others thoughts; that way when I do go out, I have a more specific area I am testing.  Thanks again for your thoughts!  Would love to hear others.

Uh...ok....Why is the word wrong spelled wrong in the dictionary?

I got a weird email from Hormel...If you get one, just delete it.  It might be Spam

A pun has not completely matured until it is full groan.

Half the people you know are below average.

LOL. Sorry I didn't complete that thought...would love to hear other's thoughts on the rod/reel lineup.  But thank you though for the humor!!

Without reading the previous suggestions, this is how I would use your setups.

1 : Jerkbaits, almost exclusively.  Because I jerk on fluorocarbon and I don't like it for topwaters.  I could also see using it for smaller Texas/Carolina rigs with 2/0 worm hooks, so 4" worms.

2 : Topwater.  I also prefer a medium powered rod for most of my small crankbaits, so with that in mind, braid to mono on this setup.

3 : Medium to deep crankbaits, single hooked moving baits(buzz, chatter, spinnerbait, swimbaits.)  I like my rod to flex easily for cranks and load deep to keep them pinned during prolonged fights with easily thrown single hooks.  Braid to mono for this as well.

4 : Lipless cranks, my finesse jigs, and lighter worming.  Probably straight fluorocarbon.

5 : Big jigs, big worming.  Offshore work.  I'm torn between straight fluoro and braid to fluoro.

6 : Flipping and pitching.  Larger swimbaits.  Braid for the former, a mono leader for the latter.

7 : Weightless worms, flukes, shakey.  Braid to 10# fluoro.

8 : Dropshot and Ned rigging.  Braid to 6# fluoro.

9 : I would sell this and get a dedicated frog setup. ?

This is how I am planning to use them...any tips or corrections?  My Shimano slx 7'10" was bought for a deep diving crankbait rod (6-10XD). Dobyns 705 is my main cranking rod.  My main questions are: spinnerbait, frog, squarebills, and topwater.  Which would you use throw those?  You can see in my applications which one's I am planning to use but would love some feedback.  image.png.12f4d79f81bf74443109031a48a51f41.png

Looks good to me. I just made my sheet for what I will be using this year. My Shimano Fanboy certainly shines through. LOL

Yes, I think a frog rod is my biggest hole right now. I don't really like a real long frog rod (<7') so I guess that will be my next investment.

any other thoughts?  Thanks again
