Would there be a problem using 15-20# mono or flouro as backing for 20-30# braid on a 1000-2500 spinning reel? I’m talking 40-50 yds of backing to maximize my spools of braid. Could this result in damage to the reels due to increased weight?

Why not some cheap mono?  You can get a 1700yd spool of 8lb Berkley Big Game for less than $10 at Walmart.  It's also a pretty decent line for general purpose.

Wouldn't be a problem except the first time it would be wiry and want to jump off. After the first top shot of braid it would take a set on the spool. FWIW 20-30 lb. braid is too heavy for a 1000 or even a 2500 size reel. I'd keep it under .20 mm.

It won’t hurt anything. 

All it is is a backing and won't be seen so should be fine.

But if you don't have enough braid to keep the Fluoro tucked away, you'll have a problem with small diameter spool....trust me.

Going to use the old stuff that I have lying around as backing.

I figure there would be 80-90 yds of braid over the backing.

It should be fine only one slight problem is the knot gonna be pretty big on 20lb mono. You gonna need at least 5-10 wraps to cover the knot. If you don’t have enough line the thin line would get caught in the knot and stop you line going out worse yet, your lures might fly away. But that is an easy fix, use plumber tape or masking tape and wrap around your knot a few times.

I used 14# mono for backing and then put 20# braid on a 2000 size Shimano Spirex spinning reel. Not had any problems so far but it has not been used a lot so far.
