how far do you pitch?

Featured Replies

I've been working hard on my pitching.  How far, from the rod tip, is a good distance, while staying accurate?  3/8 sinker with a 4 inch senko, 20 # fluoro., 7'6" heavy rod, flip/pitch reel.

60' 6"

On my 7'1" heavy jig rod, my max distance is 30 ft on my best cast of the day with a 1/2oz jig -- and that rod launches 1/2 jigs. I have tried pitching on my 8 ft catfish rod, and I can make 30-35' every cast if I'm trying because of the longer rod.

I'm guessing I would accurately get about 20  foot with that setup .

The point or focus of pitching is accuracy up to a reasonable distance.  If you can be accurate and quiet from 12 to 30 feet, your are gold. Pitching while it's windy and you're trying maintain boat position is even more fun. I taught myself to pitch in 1979 when reels were not that refined. I was a back seater as I had no boat.  My buddy sat down with his 5'6", hugged the shore line and made long overhead casts ahead of the boat. I took a " back bouncer" steelhead rod, cut it down from eight to seven feet and away I went. I took what was left and picked it apart and caught bass. Adapt and over come. The rest is memories.

A couple tricks I’ve leaned, and learned probably the hard way is,

1.  Take all of your brakes off.

2.  As with regular casts thumb control is key

3.  With dual brake reels I turn my centrifugal brakes off, I set my magnetic brake on full and adjust tension brake at a point where I can do a regular long cast with no backlash.  Then when  I want to pitch I turn my magnetic brake off.

I find this should get you an accurate pitching distance about 45 feet give or take a couple of feet.

Probably somewhere around 20 to 25 ft.
