Looking for a heavy duty reel to use on a a 7’11 XH rod for swimbaits, a-rigs, and on the rare occasion, punching. Not a fan of the round reels, so I’d like to stick with a low profile in the 200-300 size. 
 

Probably won’t use this rod very often, so don’t want to spend more than ~ $200-250 on this reel. What do you guys suggest?

 

Must say I’m a huge shimano fan, but willing to explore other brands too. Can I get by with a curado or should I upgrade to the tranx?

I have a Revo Toro Beast for swimbaits and so far this thing has been amazing but is kind of overkill for bass fishing.  If you are going to throw some heavy baits this thing can take it and more.  It's oddly buttery smooth too.  

 

It was originally around $400 but can be found for about $200-$250.  It is definitely a lot of reel for the money.

If you can find one of the old Curado 300 E's that would be a good choice.   A tranx in the size of our choice would be excellent.   I wouldn't consider any other reel.

A Curado  300E or 200/300D would be an easy get and a tank for what you're asking.

Easy get? People are asking more for the 300e's than a new Tranx and you can't hardly find a new 200d. Not easy finds at all.

Tranx 300 would be tough to beat and it will be within your price range during the next round of sales. I have a couple of them on swimbait rods and couldn't be happier.

I have a couple of Daiwa Lexa 300 with the Winn Grips that I really like. But I just recently scored a Tranx 300 off of a Facebook swimbait page. I only thought the Lexa was heavy duty - the Tranx is a beast!

I’m leaning towards the tranx. One thing I noticed is that TW has this reel listed at something like 11-12 oz. is it really that heavy and do you notice the weight when you’re fishing with it? Seems pretty heavy, but I guess when you factor in the 300 size frame, maybe not so much.

Not on a 8ft rod with big baits.You'll love it. Yes, it's 11.5 ozs.

Tranx 300

This reel would mostly be used for a-rigs with 1/8-3/16 oz heads, hudd 68 specials, s-waiver 168, etc. Nothing too big.
